Chinese troops

The permanent Chinese troops stationed in Shanhaiguan consist of the left division under the command of General Song Qing. It consisted of two battalions, one under General Ma Yukun, however, both withdrew to Tianjin in June and July before the battle, which they did not follow. In June Ma Yukun then receives an order from the Empress Dowager Cixi to enter Beiing, to destroy the Boxer Rebels along the way.

Battle

Parts of the Great Wall, the "old dragon head", were destroyed during a battle by the British during a sea raid. In response, China's Boxer troops responded with a counterattack and destroyed a nearby railroad.

Honghuzi attack

Louis Livingston Seaman writes of an incident in which China's Honghuzi bandits, who are also Boxers, arrested, tortured and executed the Sikh Guild of the Eight Nations in Shanhaiguan:

"In January, 1900, during the Boxer campaign (and Hunghutzes all the Boxers at the time) I happened to be in the Great Wall of China at Shan-HaiKwan, when a five-sikh party, with two porters and a train, went through the gate on a foraging expedition for wood.A shortly after one of the coolies rushed back, so frightened he could barely articulate, and reported that a Hung-hutzes-hung party had swooped on to sikh, who had been carelessly ignored to take their arm, and had taken them away and stealing their horses. The coolies have run away by hiding near-by nullah.

It was a "boots and saddle," and in less than that, Royal Bengal Lancers, Beluchis, and Gourkas swarmed around the hills in vain for their comrades and Boxers. But they're late. A few hours after that, they arrived at the scene of torture. All is over. All that remains is the mutilated remains of their companion and the inhumane instruments that have completed their deadly work.

The instrument of death was a sort of iron cage, about eight feet tall, made of a stick tied to a small ring on the base, resembling an umbrella steel frame on an enlarged scale. The trunks closed around the victim, just as they rounded the closed umbrella grip, and the roughly built nut or screws at the top forced them together tightly. In this hellish device the poor Habh-haws have been forced, one by one, and when the screws are tightened and the flesh of the victim stands out between the bars, these demons have cut them with their swords until they finally come, and it comes quickly.. "

Jobs

In September, Shanhaiguan was occupied by Britain, who wanted to prevent Russia from entering the area.
