Big Bird is the main protagonist of the children's show Sesame Street . Officially done by Caroll Spinney since 1969, he is a bright yellow anthropomorphic canon as tall as eight feet two inches (249 cm). He can skates, ice skates, dancing, swimming, singing, writing poetry, drawing, and even riding a tricycle. Despite having a lot of talent, he tends to misunderstand, on one occasion even singing the alphabet as one big long word (from a song called "ABC-DEF-GHI," pronounced/ÃÆ'Â|bk? Defgi: d? Ek? Lm? n? pk ?: rstu: vw? ks? z/), contemplating what could mean. He lives in a big nest behind 123 Sesame Street brownstone and is right next to Oscar's dumpster and he has a teddy bear called Radar.

In 2000, Big Bird was named Living Legend by the United States Library of Congress.

As Muppeteer Caroll Spinney has aged, the show is gradually beginning to train new players to play Big Bird. The participants include Rick Lyon in the opening theme song in the 33rd season of the show, and Matt Vogel in the "Travel to Ernie" segment.

Caroll Spinney was sick during recording some episodes of the first season, so Daniel Seagren featured Big Bird in those episodes. She also did Big Bird when she appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1969 and at the Hollywood Squares in the 1970s. According to Jim Henson Story by Stephanie St. Pierre, the costume made for Jim Henson to perform, but when Henson tried it, Kermit Love, who had made the costume, did not think that Henson was walking like a bird that was supposed to be running, and Henson decided not to do Big Bird. Frank Oz was offered the part, but because he hated showing full body characters, he refused the job.

Director Jon Stone, in the 1994 World Hypeon drama, revealed that the Big Bird costume does not actually have a gap that allows actors to see it; the small television is tied to the actor's chest to allow him to navigate. The camera was prepared for Spinney by technician Walt Rauffer, at the suggestion of director Bob Myhrum. Rauffer attached the camera to the rope tied to Spinney's chest; Spinney reports that they call the camera "electronic bras".

During an incident where Spinney (or at a lower level, Matt Vogel) performs on the spot and can not get a video feed, a small hole is made in a costume to allow him to see. In such cases, Big Bird should wear a tie to cover the hole. This can also be seen in Sesame Street Live . Likewise, during the incident where Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch (both performed by Spinney) should be in one scene together, Jim Martin operates an Oscar unless Matt Vogel operates Big Bird, where the Oscar case is done by Spinney as usual.

By 2016, being diagnosed with dystonia, Spinney is no longer a dalang puppet by time. Matt Vogel does the bird suit most of the time, with Spinney repeating the dialog later or having Vogel make his own sound. Vogel also performed Big Bird (sound and puppet) in live performances, Chrysler's The Furchester Hotel , and will voice Big Bird in the new material for Season 48 of Sesame Street after spinney semi-retired.

Costumes and depictions

Big Bird was originally designed by a picture of Jim Henson and was built by Kermit Love in 1969. The design is based on the creation of the previous Henson: A seven foot-tall dragon created by the puppeteer for La Choy's advertising campaign. The Big Bird player is completely covered in costume, and spreads his right hand over his head to operate the head and neck of the doll. Muppeteer's left hand serves as Bird's left wing, while the right wing is filled and hanging loosely from the fishing line that flows through the circle below the neck and attaches to the left wrist. The right hand thus does the opposite of the left hand: when the left hand descends, the right hand is pulled by the fishing rod. For some segments of Journey to Ernie, a second dalang (usually Jim Martin) controls the right wing of Big Bird. She is hidden by dressing in a suit coat of the same color as their key chroma background (something obviously can not be done in the main set of Sesame Street ). Big Bird's body suit weighs ten pounds, and his head weighs four pounds. According to writer Louise Gikow, the heat inside the suit was "unbearable, and very difficult to hold Big Bird's head."

Big Bird does not look the same in some international versions of Sesame Street. For example, in the Dutch version, Big Bird is blue and is called Pino .

Big Bird's appearance has changed over the years, as well as his personality. He initially had very little hair on his head; his body hair is also more wrinkled and unkempt, and his body is not round and full as now. His personality is bleaker and "bird-brained" than later. He gradually got more hair on it, gave his head a more rounded appearance, and developed a peak of fire like a lighter yellow feather above his eyes. His body was more fluffy, more rounded and more well groomed as well. His personality evolves over time from being characterized, red-witted into the innocence of little children known to this day. Although all Sesame Street Muppet characters are technically young, Big Bird is psychologically written to represent a six-year-old child.

Costumes partially assembled by American & amp; Fancy Feather, using turkey tail feathers; because its feathers are rarely clean, company owner Anthony Trento calls Big Bird's costume "his heaviest customer". Sesame Workshop is said to reject about 90 percent of all the feathers chosen for use on the costume.

The use of Big Bird in the United States presidential election, 2012

During the first presidential debate on October 3, 2012, Mitt Romney used Big Bird as an example of spending cuts he would do to reduce the federal budget deficit. Romney told the moderator, Jim Lehrer, "I love PBS, I like Big Bird.Actually like you too.But I will not - I will not continue to spend money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.. "

Barack Obama's campaign then released a satirical ad depicting Big Bird as "evil genius" and "threat to our economy", and described Romney as more concerned with cracking down Big Bird than white-collar criminals like Bernie Madoff and Ken Layman.

Sesame Workshop requested that both campaigns remove Sesame Street characters from campaign materials, stated on their website: "Sesame Workshop is a non-profit, nonprofit organization and we do not support candidates or participate in political campaigns."

Big Bird did, however, appear on the October 7, 2012 episode Saturday Night Live during the Weekend Weekend event sketch. During his performance, he made the situation light with the segment host, Seth Meyers, including bird-related jokes such as, when asked how he found that his name had been mentioned in the debate, Big Bird replied, "I got million Tweets". When asked if he had a political statement he wanted to make, Big Bird replied, "No. I do not want to 'mess with any fur'".

Spoof uses music similar to the movie Birdman . The Big Birdman spoof appears as if shot in one long shot, mimicking the movie's long scenes.
