General in auto racing, contingent sponsors is a sponsorship form in which racing teams place company decals in their vehicles in exchange for rewards for winning or meeting certain performance goals. This award can be either money or can include credits for free equipment or discounts.
The best example of the series with many contingency sponsors is the NASCAR Cup Series Energy Monster. The front fenders of the cars are adorned with rectangular stickers that the team needs or are financially encouraged to display. Some of the more lucrative possibilities are the Busch Pole Award and Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award.
Contingent sponsorship can sometimes include granting the sponsor the right to use the driver and car image in the promotional and advertising literature. Some possibilities require the team to use sponsorship equipment in addition to displaying stickers.
