Plot

Two thousand years ago, the demon Lord Piccolo (James Marsters) came to Earth, wreaking havoc with his accomplices? Zaru (Ian Whyte). Seven mystics created the Mafuba and thought they sealed it forever. However, Piccolo breaks free and with the Henchwoman Mai ninja (Eriko), starts searching for seven Dragonballs (each having a numbering star between one and seven), killing anyone in his path.

On his eighteenth birthday, high school student and martial artist Son Goku (Justin Chatwin) was given a four-star Dragonball by his grandfather, Grandpa Gohan (Randall Duk Kim). Back home from a party hosted by Chi-Chi (Jamie Chung), Goku finds his home ruined and his grandfather nearly dies after Piccolo's failed attempt to get a Dragonball.

Before he dies, Gohan tells Goku to seek out the martial arts master Muten Roshi (Chow Yun-fat), who holds another Dragonballs. Along the way, Goku meets Bulma (Emmy Rossum) from Capsule Company, who is studying a five-star Dragonball until stolen by Mai. Goku offers the protection of Bulma in return for his help in finding Roshi. They finally tracked him down in Paozu City. Under Roshi's wing, Goku begins to train his ki, knowing that they must get all the Dragonballs before the next solar eclipse, when? Zaru will come back and join Piccolo.

In the midst of a group search for a six-star Dragonball, they fall into the trap set by a desert bandit Yamcha (Taman Joon) but Roshi convinces Yamcha to join the promising 1/3 royalty for the invention of Bulma. Together, the group fought an ambush by Mai and succeeded in obtaining the next Dragonball. As the group continues their quest, they travel to the temple where Roshi consults with his former teacher Sifu Norris (Ernie Hudson) and begins preparing Mafuba charm so he can seal Piccolo back, while Goku must learn the most powerful ki-bending technique: Kamehameha.

During the night, Mai - disguised as Chi-Chi - steals three Dragonballs team, adding them to the Piccolo already obtained. With the Dragonballs successfully put together, Piccolo started calling Shen Long, but was stopped by the timely arrival of Goku's team. During the ensuing battle, Piccolo reveals to Goku that he himself is? Zaru, who had been sent to Earth as a baby to be destroyed when he grew up.

When the eclipse begins, Goku turns into? Zaru while Roshi tries to use Mafuba, but he does not have enough energy to live before he can seal back Piccolo. Roshi's dying words make Goku return to his senses when he is choked to death by? Zaru, and he involves Piccolo in the final battle, apparently defeating him with the power of Kamehameha. Goku then uses the Dragonballs to summon Shen Long, and requests that he restore Roshi to life.

As they celebrate, they realize the Dragonballs have now spread, and Bulma declares that they should look for them again. Before they get out, Goku meets with Chi-Chi to get to know him better, and they start a sparring game to see which one is stronger. In the post-credit scene, Piccolo has survived Goku Kamehameha's blast and is being treated by an unknown woman.

Production

Development

In 2002, 20th Century Fox acquired feature film rights for the Dragon Ball franchise. That same year, Stephen Chow was approached to direct the movie, and although he said he was very interested because he is a fan of Dragon Ball, Chow declined the opportunity to direct. He did, however, accept a role as a producer through his Star Overseas company. Robert Rodriguez, Mark A.Z. DippÃÆ' Â © and Zack Snyder was offered to direct but pass. 20th Century Fox then went on to send the script to the writer/director James Wong received. In 2007, James Wong and Stephen Chow were announced as their respective directors and producers, and the project was titled Dragonball . Ben Ramsey's first draft was considered too expensive to take, and in the end he wrote about five different draft manuscripts following notes from the studio. James Wong wrote the last draft, again according to records from the studio, but decided to remain unaccredited as a screenwriter. Chow is a fan of the Dragon Ball, quoting "a roomy story that leaves little room for creation," but explains he will only act as a producer because he believes that he should only direct stories he has. created.

The cost difference for producing the film has been reported. In January 2008, Marsters spoke with a TV Guide that he was told the film had a budget of about $ 100 million. In April 2009, Spanish television station Telecinco reported that its budget was $ 50 million. Marsters later claimed that the film was actually produced for $ 30 million.

Casting

Justin Chatwin was chosen to play the central character of the movie Goku. Ron Perlman initially offered the role of Lord Piccolo's villain, but refused him to work on Hellboy II: The Golden Army . James Marsters, who received the role, noted that he is a fan of the original anime series, describing it as "the coolest television cartoon in the last 50,000 years [for] having a good sense of Shakespeare's wickedness." Summarizing his original Piccolo concept, he said that the character was "thousands of years old and a very long time ago he used to be a good force, but [he] was involved in a bad fight and was jailed for 2000 years. , and he found a way to escape and then try to destroy the world. "Initially, Piccolo would be described as a handsome creature, but Marsters and makeup artists chose to give him a dilapidated style to reflect that he had been trapped for thousands of years. The first time the make-up was applied, it took seventeen hours and left Marster with difficulty breathing. In subsequent apps, it generally takes only four hours.

Stephen Chow initially wanted to portray Zhang Yuqi, who worked with him on CJ7 for a piece of Chi Chi, but the role eventually went to Jamie Chung.

Filming

The subject of photography began on December 3, 2007, in Mexico City, Mexico. Locations include Universidad TecnolÃÆ'³gica de MÃÆ'Ã… © xico.

From 2 January 2008, the crew shot the Sierra de ÃÆ'â € Å"rganos National Park. The crew moved to Estado de MÃÆ'Ã… © xico in March of that year for several shots at Nevado de Toluca. The shooting has also been scheduled in Los Angeles, California. In adapting the Dragon Ball manga, futuristic cities and flying vehicles are maintained, however, anthropomorphic creatures and talking animals (such as Turtle, Oolong and Puar) are dropped. Many locations are very Oriental, and there are some Aztec influences as well, especially from their temples. It is thought that Rossum would wear a blue wig to resemble his anime counterpart, but ultimately it was decided that such a view was too unrealistic. Instead it has natural chocolate with blue stripes. Chatwin does not wear a wig when the director feels Chatwin's hair is similar to Goku's hair. A large number of Dragonball Evolution were shot at an abandoned jeans factory, also located in Durango, Mexico.

Dragonball Evolution special effects are performed by Amalgamated Dynamics, while the visual effects are performed by Ollin Studios, Zoic Studios, and Imagine Engine.

Music

On December 9, 2008, it was confirmed that the theme song would be "Rule" by Japanese singer Ayumi Hamasaki. Also featured on the soundtrack of the film are American pop artist Brian Anthony, whose remixed track "Worked Up" was released as a single in the UK, and included in the home video release as a bonus feature.

The soundtrack of the film, Dragonball Evolution: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, was released in the United States on March 17, 2009 by VarÃÆ'¨se Sarabande.

The score was compiled by Brian Tyler, who recorded the score with an 82-piece ensemble from the Hollywood Studio Symphony at Newman Scoring Stage in 20th Century Fox.

He criticized the lack of film explaining the plot elements, the stale plot and the lackluster effort by the actors. Russell Edwards found the film "pretty", "fun to paint-with-numbers", noting it "not too serious, but avoiding campiness", that "climactic clash between Piccolo and Goku offers a CGI representation the faithful of the subtle forces as depicted in the original manga "and that the climax offers" a memorable character change for Goku that will warm the shells from every young Jungian heart. Creator reactions

Before the film was released, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama was initially surprised by Dragonball Evolution and advised her fans to treat her as an alternative version of the universe from her work. In an interview with Asahi Shimbun on Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods , Toriyama revealed that he feels Hollywood producers are not listening and his ideas and suggestions, and that the final version is not equivalent to the original Dragon Ball series, and felt the result was a movie he could not even call "Dragon Ball". Discussing the movie in the 30th Anniversary of the Dragon Ball 30 Super History Book, Toriyama writes: "I have put the Dragon Ball behind me but see how many live-action movies that mark me..."

In 2016, author Ben Ramsey apologized for the film, writes: "To have something with my name on it as a writer so glorified is heartbreaking, to receive hate mail from around the world is heartbreaking. (...) I went to the project chasing a big paycheck, not as a franchise enthusiast but as an entrepreneur who takes on the task.I've learned that when you go to a creative effort without passion, you come out with less than optimal results, and sometimes throw out garbage. So I do not blame anyone for the Dragonball [Evolution] but myself.
