A Lesson In Gasser Style From The Northwest - Speedhunters

A gasser is a type of hot rod originating from the dragstrips of the United States in the late 1950s and continued into the early 1970s. In the days before the Pro Stock, A/Gas cars were the fastest drivers on the market.

Histori

Gassers were based on a closed body production model from the 1930s to the mid-1960s, which had been stripped of foreign weights and boosted using a tubular shaft or tubular shaft to provide better weight distribution at acceleration (beam axles also lighter than independent suspension fronts ), although an elevated stock front suspension is also common. Common weight reduction techniques include fiberglass body panels, stripped interiors, and glass windows (sometimes colored).

The Willys 1933-36 coupe and pickup is a very popular gasser. The most famous is 1933 Willys 77. It never built in large numbers, making it a puzzle why he became popular: it was not cheap or abundant. Keith Ferrell Dogcatcher, for example, was a 1936 shipment with fuel injected into a small-scale Chevrolet, built for class; in 1967, Ferrell accidentally left something to run it on B/Modified (later, with supercharger, on BB/A).

Once the company is revived, the 1937-42 coupe, sedan, and pickup are again popular with hot rodders and gasser teams, and again, relatively low production leaves the reason why they get so much attention. Ollie Olsen's 1940 coupà ©  © Wil-A-Meaner (Driven by Bob "Rapid" Dwyer) won the 1961 Nationals' A/G title. Between 1962 and 1964, Hassel & amp; Vogelsong 1940 coupÃÆ' © "is the scourge B/Gas", won the 1963 and 1964 Nationals and set a national record of 1964 in 11.34. In 1967, the 1933 Hrudka Brothers panel shipments were a popular wheelstander.

The Postwar Willyses were also used (such as Bremerton, who was based in 1954 Willys's 1951 Speedist Specialies in 1954), but, although a better chassis than the 1955-7 Chevrolet, was never as popular as the car before war.

Combinations can be unusual. Fujimo, Too! is a B/G 1950 Plymouth business coupe (run by Adler and Trout) with an injected Oldsmobile and Hydro-Motive transmission.

Throughout the 1960s, Stickle and Riffle Anglia, based in Rod Shop and driven by Bob Riffle, were often the winners. Their only national title, however, was the B/G title in 1967 Nationals and C/G in 1968 Nationals. The best Riffle pass in B/Gas is 10.54 seconds at 128.20 mph (206.32 km/h).

In 1965 the NHRA Nationals, held at Indianapolis Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Indiana, 1941 Willyses driven by Dick Bourgeous (owned by "Big John" Mamazian, sponsored by Engle Cams) and Doug "Cookie" Cook (the Stone-Woods-Cook gasser , sponsored by Isky Cams) confronted with A/GS. (Cook won by a margin of 14.20 seconds at 116.53 mph (187.54 km/h).)

Stone-Woods-Cook left A/GS for Top Fuel Funny Car in the early 1967 season.

The first model car was allowed in Gas class in 1967.

Mamazian will be out of gas class for funny car fuel in 1968.

The gas class was eliminated by NHRA in 1972.

Engine

Since they are primarily built for racing, these cars usually have engines switched to larger or stronger ones, or existing stock machines are modified (often heavy). It is very common to customize a modified Roots supercharger from the original use of General Motors two-wheel diesel engine and mechanical fuel injection, manufactured by Algon, Hilborn, or Crower.

Suspension

With the shape determined by function, their appearance is often very heavy and stiff, mostly because the front end is raised higher than the stock, to assist in the transfer of weight during fast acceleration (racing). The exhaust pipe out through the front fenders well is a common characteristic of the gasser, such as having a body painted with flamboyant metalflakes, pearls, and candies equipped with wild letters. Most gassers also have a ladder bar.

Name

The name arises because they compete in gasoline-drag racing classes, rather than using methanol or nitromethane.
