Hot rod is an old American classic car with a large engine modified for linear velocity. The origin of the term "hot rod" is unclear. For example, some claim that the term "hot" refers to a stolen vehicle. Other origin stories include replacing the engine camshaft or "rod" with higher performance versions.
This term has been extended to apply to other items modified for a particular purpose, such as "hot rod amplifier".

There are various theories about the origin of the term "hot rod". The general theme is "hot" associated with "cooling" the car, which means modifying it for better performance. One theory is that the "rod" means a roadster, a light 2-door car that is often used as a base for early hot rods. Another theory is that the "rod" refers to the camshaft, part of a machine that is often upgraded to increase the power output.
In the early days, cars modified for performance improvements were called "lightning jobs". This term changed into hot rods in the early to mid 1950s.
The term "hot rod" has various uses in relation to car performance. For example, the Ontario Ministry of the Environment in its vehicle emission regulations, referring to hot rods as motor vehicles that have replacement machines that are different from the original factory.

History
1920 to 1945
Its predecessor on hotrod is a modified car used in the era of Prohibition by harvests to avoid other revenue and law enforcement agencies.
Hot rods first appeared in the late 1930s in southern California, where people raced with modified cars on dry-bed beds in northeastern Los Angeles, under the rules of the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), among groups other. It gained popularity after World War II, particularly in California, as many returned soldiers had received technical training. The first hot rod is an old car (most often Ford, usually Model Ts, 1928-31 Model As, or 1932-34 Model Bs), modified to reduce weight. 1945 to 1960
After World War II, many small military airports across the country were abandoned or rarely used, thus allowing rodder across the country to race on a marked course. Initially, drag racing has tracks of 1 mi (1.6 km) or more, and includes up to four racing tracks simultaneously. Because some hot rodder also race on the road, there is a need for an organization to improve safety, and provide a place for safe racing. The National Hot Rod Association was founded in 1951, to bring drag races off the streets and into a controlled environment.
In the 50s and 60s, the Ford flathead V8 was replaced by the Chrysler FirePower engine (known as "early hemi"). Many hot rods will increase the brakes from mechanical to hydraulic ("juice") and headlights from the bulb to the closed beam. A typical mid-1950s to early 1960s is a Deuce custom made flavorless and sharply shredded, powered by Ford or Mercury Flathead, with Edelbrock's intake manifolds, Harman and Collins magneto, and Halibrand rapid differential changes. The front suspension hair clip is adapted from sprint cars, such as Kraft Kurtis.
When hot rodding became more popular, magazines and associations serving hot rodders began, such as Hot Rod magazine, which was founded in 1948.
1960 to present
As the cars offered by major manufacturers began to improve performance, the lure of hot rods began to decrease. With the advent of muscle cars, it is now possible to buy high-performance cars directly from the showroom.
But the 1973 Oil Crisis caused the car manufacturer to focus on fuel efficiency above performance, leading to a revival of interest in hot rodding. As the focus shifts away from racing, the modified car is known as the "rod". The National Street Rod Association (NSRA) was formed and began holding events.
In the 1970s, the 350-cu di (5.7Ã, l) small-block Chevy V8 was the most common choice of engines for hot rods. Another popular engine choice is the Ford Windsor engine. During the 1980s, many car manufacturers reduced their engine displacement, making it more difficult for hot rod builders to get large displacement machines. Instead, engine builders should modify smaller engines (such as using crankshafts and non-standard pistons) to gain greater displacement. While the current V8 production tends to be the most frequent candidate, it is also applied to others.
