According to the Exodus Book, Moses staff (Hebrew: ?????? , translated "stick" in the King James Bible) is used to produce water from rocks, converted into snakes and backs, and is used for the Far East separation. Whether Moses's stick was the same or not used by his brother Aaron (known as Aaron's stick) was debated by rabbi scholars.

Reference to staff

The staff was first mentioned in the Book of Exodus (Chapter 4, verse 2), when God appeared to Moses in the flaming bush. The Lord asked what Moses had in his hand, and Moses answered "the staff" ("stick" in the KJV version). The staff miraculously turned into a snake and then returned to the staff. The staff then referred to as "God's stick" or "God's stick" (depending on his translation).

"And thou shalt take this rod in thy hand, and thou shalt do signs." Then Moses went and returned to his son-in-law Yethro, and said to him, "Let me go, I pray you, and return to my brethren who are in Egypt, and see whether they are yet alive." And Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace". And L ORD said to Moses in Midian, "Go, return to Egypt: for all the dead who seek your life." So Moses took his wife and his sons and placed them on the donkey and returned to the land of Egypt, and Moses took the staff of God in his hand. (KJV. Release of article 4)

Moses and Aaron appeared before Pharaoh when Aaron's rod turned into a snake. The magicians of Pharaoh also were able to turn their own stick into a snake, but Aaron swallowed it. Aaron's rod was used to change the red Nile. It was used several times at God's command to start a plague in Egypt.

During the Exodus, Moses stretched out his hand with a stick to separate the Red Sea. While in the "desert" after leaving Egypt, Moses followed God's command to strike rock with a stick to create a spring for Israel to drink from (Exodus 17: 5-7). Moses did it, and water came out of the rock in front of the Elders of Israel.

Moses also used a stick in battle in Rephidim between the Israelites and Amalekites (Exodus 17: 8-15). When he raised his arm holding "the staff of God", the Israelites "won", when he dropped his hands, their enemies were on the wind. Aaron and Hur helped him to keep the staff awake until the victory was achieved.

Finally, God told Moses to draw water for the Israelites from the rock by speaking to the rock (Numbers 20: 8). But Moses, out of resentment with the complaint of the Israelites, instead of speaking with stone as the Lord commanded, struck the stone twice with the stick. Since Moses disobeyed God's command to speak to the rock, implying a lack of faith, God punished Moses by not letting him enter the Promised Land (Numbers 20:12).

Relation to the Aaron bar

Since Aaron's rod and Moses' rods were equally given similar powers, which seemed to be interchangeable, Rabbinic scholars debated whether the two sticks were one and the same. According to Midrash Yelammedenu (Yal... on Ex. Ã,§ 869):

the staff that Jacob crossed the Jordan was identical to what Judah gave to his son-in-law, Tamar (Genesis xxxii.10, xxxviii.18). Likewise the sacred sticks Moses used (Exodus 20, 21), with which Aaron performed wonders before Pharaoh (Ex 10), and with which, finally, David killed a gigantic Goliath (I Sam. ). David gave it to his offspring, and the kings of David used it as a crutches to the ruins of the Temple, then it miraculously vanished. When the Messiah comes it will be given to him for the stick of power as a sign of his authority over the infidels.

In Jewish legends then the stick was said to have been created in the beginning of the world on the sixth day of creation and was passed through the hands of the foremost ancestors before being passed down by Moses.

Alleged current location

There has been much speculation about what has happened to Moses' staff.

Midrash (the homily method of biblical interpretation) states that the staff is inherited from generation to generation and belongs to the kings of Judea until the First Temple is destroyed. It is unknown what became of the staff after the Temple was destroyed and the Jews were exiled from the land.

According to the identity documents at Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Moses' staff should be on display today in Topkap? Palace, Istanbul, Turkey. Topkapi Palace has other sacred relics, especially those associated with the prophet of Islam, Muhammad. (Like his bow, his sword, his footprints, and even his teeth.) Topkap? The palace was officially designated as a museum in 1924, and the holy relics were placed in the public view on 31 August 1962. It is said that Sultan Selim I (1512-1520) brought holy relics to Topkapi Palace after conquering Egypt in 1517.
