Black first made a name for himself in the mid-1940s in boat racing. He set a world record in the second time in the Salton Sea. People liked his machine, and he quickly started his business from his garage.
He opened Keith Black Racing Engine in 1959. In 1961, his boat exploits included nearly 50 international and national records.
Drag the racing team to hear about his racing machine, and he was convinced by Tommy Greer's friend to build a drag racing bike for the Greer-Black-Prudhomme Fuel dragster. In 1962 and 1963, the team won more than 250 rounds to less than 25 losses. Black spent time in the late 1960s with Top Fuel challengers from Roland Leong, and in the early 1970s with Plymouth Barracuda Funny Car campaigned by the "Big John" Mazmanian.
