Description
Regardless of genus or species, cereus flowers that bloom at night are almost always white or very pale colors of other colors, often large, and often fragrant. Most of the flowers opened after nightfall, and by dawn, most were in the process of withering. Plants in the same geographical area tend to bloom on the same night. Also for healthy plants there can sometimes be as many as three separate blossoming events scattered during the hottest months. Plants that have such flowers can be high, columnar, and sometimes very large and tree-like, but more often are thin-stalkers. While some cereus that are blooming at night are planted indoors in homes or greenhouses in cold climates, most of these plants are too big or rigid for this treatment, and are only found outdoors in the tropics.
