Atlanta Motor Speedway (formerly Atlanta International Raceway ) is a 1.5-mile oval race track in Hampton, Georgia, United States, 20 miles (32 km) south of Atlanta. It annually hosts the NASCAR Cup Series car racing since its inauguration in 1960.

The venue was purchased by Speedway Motorsports in 1990. In 1994, 46 condos were built on the northeast side of the track. In 1997, to standardize trajectories with two other intermediate ovals, the entire trajectory was almost completely rebuilt. Frontstretch and backstretch are swapped, and the trajectory configuration changes from oval to quad-oval, with a new official length of 1.54 miles (2.48 km). This project makes the track to be one of the fastest on the NASCAR circuit. It has a seating capacity of 125,000 total.

The track hosts the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race every year on Labor Day weekend from 2009 to 2014. The 2009 move from the October race date to Labor Day weekend is also accompanied by a change of start time, marking the first NASCAR Monster Energy Series Cup in down lights at Atlanta Motor Speedway and the return of Labor Day weekend NASCAR racing to the Southern United States.

Another highlight of the facility is a quarter-mile track between the pit road and the main line for Legends racing and a 2.5-mile (4.0 km) highway approved by the FIA. In 1996, the speedway hosted the Countryfest concert, attracting over 200,000 fans.

For most of the 1990s and 2000s, the track boasted the highest speed on the NASCAR circuit, with a typical qualifying round speed of around 193 mph (311 km/h), first posted by the Breton Roussel driver on June 22, 1990, and a speed record round more than 197 mph (317 km/h). In 2004 and 2005, a similarly designed Texas Motor Speedway saw a slightly faster qualifying time, and because the racing surfaces of each track were obsolete, the speed of qualifications in Texas has become consistently faster than in Atlanta. The NASCAR circuit has two lines, the longer Talladega Superspeedway and the Daytona International Speedway, which used to be faster than Atlanta or Texas, with lap speeds typically exceeding 200 mph (322 km/h), but the limiting plate was mandated to be used on the track at 1988 after Bobby Allison's loud crash in Talladega the previous year, reduced the average lap speed to around 190 mph (306 km/h). NASCAR does not require bounding plates in Atlanta or Texas, which helps lead to the adoption of Atlanta's commercial slogan, "Real Racing, Real Fast."

On August 5, 2010, the president of 'speedway' Ed Clark announced that Atlanta will be re-scaled NASCAR event schedules for 2011. The line maintains the Labor Day weekend date, but loses its racing spring. The race was given to Kentucky Speedway, another song owned by SMI, giving the song the long-awaited and desirable Cup race, Quaker State 400.

Every year from spring to autumn, the speedway hosts "Friday Night Drags" in which participants drag the race down the pit path. The race takes place on a stretch of 1/8 mile and starts with a hand drop. No lights or timers are used.

The facility also hosts several year-round driving schools, such as the Richard Petty Driving Experience, where visitors have the opportunity to experience a brisk walk from a unique point of view behind the wheel of a race car. The track also hosts the Speed Tech Driving School, which allows individuals to race 6 or more laps on the track when not in use for NASCAR or other events.

NASCAR President Mike Helton was once the track's general manager. Ed Clark is the current President and CEO.

By the end of 2015 Atlanta Motor Speedway announces that it will install SAFER barrier throughout the exterior and most of the inside around the track.

After 20 years, the track will experience the first repetition after the 2018 race weekend. This marks the first time the track has been repeated since it was reconfigured in 1997 from oval to quad-oval. Over the last few years, rough surfaces must be coated to maintain the integrity of the track, although for some recent dirt comes from the track.

Weather

In early September 2004, Atlanta Motor Speedway discovered another use: it became a refuge for refugees from Florida who fled from Hurricane Frances. Although there are no indoor facilities available, visitors are waiting for a very slow moving storm parked in their recreational vehicle, after crawling for hours in traffic on the nearest Interstate 75. In 2005, the speedway received heavy damage on the night of July 6, caused by the F2 tornado that spawned from the remains of Hurricane Cindy. Roof and facade torn building and marking pole was overthrown. In 2005 practice began to expand until Friday night, and soon the two Cup races began to display the qualifying night. In 2006, the start time of the Bass Pro Shops 500 was adjusted to guarantee the finish of the night.
