Character
Lee Brothers
For most of the series, players control martial artist Billy Lee , who fights against various enemies such as gang members and opposing fighters. He is often aided by his twin brother Jimmy Lee , who usually serves as the second player character in most games. Lee brothers are characterized as the successor of the fictional martial art known as S? Setsuken ( ??? , "Twin Sever Fist", also known as S? Saiken ) , which combines techniques from other styles such as karate, tai chi, and Shorinji Kempo.
This duo was not actually named when the original arcade game was originally released in Japan, although the names of Hammer and Spike were given to them in the cabinet and promotional brochures produced by Taito for the version overseas. Billy and Jimmy Lee's names were first established in the Famicom/NES version of the first game and consequently used in other console versions and tie-in products, such as the original soundtrack album The Original Sound of Double Dragon, actually used in an arcade version until Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone . Billy Lee's name comes from a combination of Bruce Lee's first name with the first name of his character Billy Lo from the Game of Death movie, while Jimmy is named after musician Jimmy Page
Due to the difference between the arcade and console versions of the game, the designs of the Lee brothers tend to vary throughout the series. While the original arcade game has Player 1 controlling a blond brother Lee who wears a blue outfit and Player 2 as a brown brunette in red, the NES version has their hair color and changing outfit: Billy is now a brown-haired sister blue, while Jimmy became a blond brunette in red. Super Double Dragon is the first game to have different Lee brothers hairstyles during game play, with Billy styled hair styled and Jimmy flat top spikes, design conventions adopted by subsequent games like << i > Double Dragon Advance and smartphone versions, despite some in-game promotional and visual arts for previous games (such as the final photo of Double Dragon II: The Revenge and the sequence of character/portrait characters from > Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones ) has described Lee's brother with a different hairstyle. Other games, such as competitive Neo-Geo fighting games and Double Dragon Neon, portray Lee brothers as identical twins like in the first arcade game.
Both brothers were shown romantic interest in a young woman named Marian , a student in their dojo. The arcade version of the first game (along with most console versions) can end with the two brothers fighting each other against Marian if the two players reach the end together, with survivors finally winning Marian's affection. The Famicom/NES version, which sets Marian as Billy's long-term girlfriend, changes the story so that Jimmy is actually the leader of the Black Warriors (a change made as a result of the lack of two-player cooperative play in the version) and is the one who governs Marian's abduction.
Enemy characters
The enemy organization of the original Double Dragon is a Black Warriors gang, characterized as the dominant criminal organization in New York City after the nuclear war left the seized city. law and order. Just like the Lee brothers themselves, the names of the gang members are established throughout the console versions of the series. The original leader of the gang was the Willy Mackey machine gun (generally known only as Willy ), who wanted to gain knowledge of Lee brothers martial arts for himself and ordered Marian's kidnapping as a ransom. Repeated gang members in different versions of the first game include thugs Williams and Rowper , dominatrix Linda , and strong bald Abobo . The arcade version also features two unnamed head swaps from other characters (ie Abobo and Lee brothers) as the final boss: although this character is not in the NES version, which instead introduces a unique enemy, a Chinese martial artist named Chin Taimei . Lee's head swap head will appear in Mark III/System System version released by Sega, where he is named Jeff .
The gang name will change in the game later. While the arcade version of Double Dragon II: The Revenge makes Willy and Black Warriors avenge their previous defeat by shooting down Marian, the Famicom version replaces Willy with an anonymous fighter who leads the mysterious armed group following the original Black Soldier dissolution. Though unnamed in the Japanese version, the NES version of English localization will refer to this organization as Shadow Warriors (or Black Shadow Warriors in the manual), a name then used for groups unrelated enemies in the Super Double Dragon , as well as Willy's own gang in Double Dragon Advance . The Shadow Warriors is also the name of the criminal group in the Double Dragon series animation and its tie-in game, Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, where they almost reach the fullest of characters new.
The names of Williams and Rowper come from the characters played by Jim Kelly and John Saxon respectively in the movie Enter Enter the Dragon . Other characters seem to follow the same naming convention as Linda, who shares her name with Bruce Lee's widow, Linda Lee Cadwell, and enemy characters Bolo from Double Dragon II: The Revenge who shares his name with actor Bolo Yeung.
Gameplay
Gameplay in most games takes place in a pseudo-3D perspective like in Renegade and then beat-'em-up, where player characters can move in four directions but always facing left or right. Players can perform various weaponless fighting techniques against their enemies, as well as using melee weapons such as baseball bats and throwing knives normally obtained from enemies. In some installments, there are techniques that can be done in combination with other players.
