Tentang Tim

The team, formed in January 2007, has more than 20 members from the College of Engineering and Arts and Sciences. The team officially entered the competition and submitted the initial design on 12 June 2007. The Element One team was placed in the top three during their Step 3 design. The team completed their final design, Step 4 of the design competition, in March 2008. On March 14, 2008, Formula Zero announced that Element One was ranked 1st in the design competition and was one of six teams to receive a 'racing package' from the organizers , which consists of an 8-kW Hydrogenic fuel cell power module and a hydrogen storage cylinder. The team that was awarded the race package was allowed to build and race their hydrogen powered racing vehicle in the 2008-2009 racing series. Races are expected to be held at locations such as England, the Netherlands, Spain, the US, and several other planned locations.

The first race took place on 22 August 2008 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Unfortunately, Element One is not racing on the show due to problems with ground clearance. Nevertheless, the team managed to get a vehicle that runs immediately after the race at the Formula Zero Rotterdam test facility. Video from the walking vehicle can be found here. Although not racing, Element One vehicles were awarded 'Best Vehicle Design' by Bright Magazine during the 2008 Formula Zero award ceremony in Rotterdam. The team was restructured after the members returned from Rotterdam. Vehicles also experience some changes to improve performance. In January 2009, the new vehicle was featured at the 2009 North American International Automotive Exhibition in Detroit, Michigan. On March 31 and April 1, 2009, Element One conducted a public demonstration of vehicles and to participants of the National Hydrogen Association conference in South Carolina. The team received a very positive reception both from the fuel cell industry and the community. The vehicle is also a concern for local journalists and TV stations. Following a demonstration vehicle in South Carolina, Element One decided to design and build a completely new vehicle for the 2010 Formula SAE Hybrid competition. The new vehicle will not use hydrogen fuel cells but instead, will use a combustion engine as a generator, as well as a battery pack for the vehicle's powerplant. The 2009 Element One vehicle is still used as a demonstration vehicle by Lawrence Tech University and even made another appearance at the North American International Auto Show in January 2010. Formula Zero continues to host races across Europe with European teams in hopes of developing its own race class. Element One Progress can be followed on their Youtube Element One Channel, where updates are posted on a regular basis.

Vehicle

Element One is the lightest vehicle in the Formula Zero race series, weighing around 500 pounds. The vehicle chassis is built entirely of carbon fiber by Lawrence Tech students in Columbus, Ohio, making Element One the first fuel cell vehicle of its kind. This vehicle also features the most powerful motor in competition with regenerative braking capability. The vehicle's top speed is about 70 mph. Power is generated from the Hydrogenic fuel cell module of 8 kilowatts of vehicle and energy is stored through ultracapacitors. All communication between motor controllers, fuel cells and ultracapcitors is programmed by Lawrence Tech students. Advanced technology and engineering incorporated into Element One vehicles make this a very ambitious project undertaken by students.

Team Founder

Element One, originally called 'Project Blue Devil', was founded in January 2007 by four Lawrence Tech students who are interested in renewable energy and want to build zero emissions vehicles. After nearly three years of searching for the right opportunity to build a vehicle, one of the four students met the Formula Zero organization in the Netherlands in December 2006 while studying abroad in Germany. A month later, the four students rejoined and with the support of their faculty advisor, their proposal to form a team of Formula Zero Lawrence Tech was approved by the university. The project was established by the following students and faculty advisors.

2008 One Rotatedam Crew Pit Element

The Rotterdam Pit Crew is a select group of members of Element One who traveled to the first race of the Formula Zero Championships in Rotterdam, The Netherlands in August 2008 to ensure all vehicle systems are fully operational and operational during the race event. The Pit Crew worked hard to finish assembling the vehicle before the first race. Unfortunately, it is a ground clearance vehicle that prevents these engineers from getting their karts on the track. Nevertheless, the team managed to get the vehicle assembled in five days (a feat that usually takes several months) and tested the vehicle at the Zero Rotterdam Formula Facility on the eve of the first race. The names of these engineers are listed in the table below.

Publicity

The Element One team has traveled to countries and countries such as Ohio, Florida, Nevada, California, The Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Canada, and Trinidad & Tobago to generate excitement about sustainable transport and to change the way people think about energy. The project has the support and encouragement of many influential people, including Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm, who visited Lawrence Tech in February 2008 to learn about vehicle design. Given the uniqueness of the project, this team featured in the September 2008 edition of Popular Science Magazine. The team's achievements were also highlighted by the Detroit Free Press, WJR Radio, Gulf News, Fuel Cell Today, AutoblogGreen, Detroit Auto Scene, and more.

2009 to Now: Formula Hybrid Competition

With the Formula Zero Competition coming to an end, the remaining team members started looking for a new motor sport energy competition. After reviewing the available places, the team decided on the SAE-approved Hybrid Formula Competition. In this new venue, the design focus turned away from hybrid fuel cell power series, to parallel internal combustion and hybrid series exclusively. With all the previous focus on the series hybrid architecture, the team continues to advance into the 2010 competition year with independent rear wheel drive power by two DC motors.
