Plot
During a set of winter holidays, all the dragons of Berk suddenly depart, leaving everyone confused. The only exception seems to be Toothless, who can not fly alone. Because of affection, Hiccup created it a new prosthesis that allowed it to fly independently, and thus allow its escape. Three days later, Meatlug, a Gronkle dragon who had chained Fishlegs, fled, accidentally picked up Hiccup. Meatlug travels to the hot sulfur springs island where other dragons have hatched their eggs. Astrid and the gang also found Dragon eggs in the Meatlug's nest, which they spread around Berk in the hope of lifting up the spirits of the villagers. This plan backfires as dragon eggs hatch with explosions, destroying Berk.
While searching for Toothless, Hiccup meets Stormfly (Astrid's Deadly Nadder), Hookfang (Snotlout's Monstrous Nightmare) and their baby. Wanting to get a ride home, Hiccup inadvertently triggered their migration back. Despite the destruction, the citizens of Berk are full of joy to see their dragon return.
During the next celebration, Toothless returns, having spent all his time going looking for the missing Hiccup helmet. The next day, Toothless destroys his new tail and forces Hiccup to place his old saddle and become his rider again. Hiccup concludes the short adage that he has given an unparalleled gift (freedom), but Toothless gives him a better (friendship and perhaps more...).
