Greyhawk is an additional rule book written by Gary Gygax and Robert J. Kuntz for the original edition of Dungeons & amp; Dragons fantasy role-playing game. This has been called "the first and most important supplement" for the original rule D & amp; D . By adding a combat system, it breaks all connections with Chainmail , creates D & amp; D a truly stand-alone gaming system. Although the name of the book was taken from a house campaign overseen by Gygax and Kuntz based on the Greyhawk Castle idolized by Gygax and the surrounding land, Greyhawk did not give any details about the castle or the world of the campaign; instead, he explains the rules that Gygax and Kuntz use in their home campaigns, and introduces a number of character classes, mantras, concepts, and monsters used in all subsequent editions of D & amp; D .

Original rule for Dungeons & amp; Dragon published by TSR in 1974, but limited in scope: character class and monsters are listed in small numbers; and for combat rules, the player must have a copy of Chainmail, the rule book for miniature wargames published by Guidon Games in 1971. Over the next two years, TSR backs the original rule with five additional books. Greyhawk is the first of these supplements, named after Gary Gygax's home campaign.

Publication 2004 30 Years of Adventure: Celebration of Dungeons & amp; The dragon suggests that the details of the Greyhawk Gygax campaign are published in this booklet. But Gygax had no plans in 1975 to publish the details of the Greyhawk world, as he believed that new players from Dungeons & amp; The dragon prefers to create his own world instead of using the property of others. In addition, he did not want to publish all the material he created for his players; he thinks he is unlikely to recover a fair investment for the thousands of hours he spends, and since his secret will be revealed to his players he will be forced to re-create a new world for them afterwards. In fact, only two references to the Greyhawk campaign are the illustrations of a large rock head in the underground corridor entitled The Great Stone Face, Enigma of Greyhawk and mentions a fountain on the second floor of a basement that constantly issues the number of snakes that endless.

The 68-page supplement focused instead on the new game rules developed by Gygax and Kuntz for hours at home. This supplement also removes game dependency on the Chainmail rule by providing its own set of combat rules, which makes it much easier for new players who are not campaigning to understand the concept of the game.

Greyhawk also introduces new character classes (thieves and paladins), as well as combat rules, spells, monsters, and new treasures. Greyhawk inserted a new rule on weapon damage that varies with weapons. Supplements add new treasures and magic items, and new spells, including 7, 8, and 9 level spells. These supplements also include sections on monsters, introducing male lizards, beholder, beasters, flashing dogs, crawler carcasses, and many others.

Publishing history

Greyhawk was in the process at the time of the death of TSR co-founder Don Kaye in January 1975, and published several months later in the spring of 1975. It was designated and added by TSR 2003, Many of the new rules presented in supplements eventually become a standard part of the game AD & amp; D . The second supplement, Blackmoor , followed later that same year.

Illustrations for supplements are provided by Greg Bell.

Judges Guild's Ready Ref Sheets (1977) collects along 20 chart pages from the original box D & amp; D , Chainmail and Greyhawk Materials from Greyhawk , along with the original D & amp; D and Blackmoor and Eldritch Wizardry supplements, has been revised for J. Eric Holmes' Dungeons & amp; Dragons Basic Set (1977).

In 2013, the supplement Greyhawk is reproduced as a premium reprint of the original "Box White" rule D & amp; D. Each booklet presents a new cover but is otherwise a faithful original reproduction.

Reception

Lawrence Schick, in his 1991 book Heroic Worlds , mentions Greyhawk "The first and most important supplement to Original D & D ".

Shannon Appelcline, in his 2011 Designer & amp; Dragons , considers Greyhawk as "innovation" because at that time "supplements are largely unheard of in the wargaming industry.Although the game is often revised and reprinted, constantly developing the game is something that new. "
