Plot
Joe and Emily Darrow are doctors at a Chicago hospital. Emily, who is seven months pregnant, travels to Venezuela to help indigenous people in the Amazon region. He died when a bus was hit by a landslide and fell into the river below. His body was never found by local authorities.
Without taking the time to grieve Joe back to work. One night he was awakened by the weight of his wife's dragonfly paper that fell and rolled across the room. His wife always has a passion for dragonfly and even has a birthmark on his shoulder that resembles a dragonfly. Joe started visiting Emily's patient in a pediatric oncology unit at the hospital. One of his wife's patients was brought into a state of unconsciousness. Joe heard the boy call out his name and follow the staff who tried to revive him without results - the boy's heart line was flat. As Joe approached the boy, suddenly the heart began to beat again.
The next afternoon Joe returns to the boy who asks if he is "Emily Joe" and tells him that he sent him back to tell Joe something. The whole room is a picture of a curved cross, but the boy does not know what the symbol means. The boy tells of his near-death experience, that he saw the light, and a woman showed him Joe's image, and that the symbol of the cross is what he sees at the end of the rainbow. Then, as he passed the other boy's room, Joe saw the same picture. The boy immediately knew who Joe was and told him that he had to "go to the rainbow".
When Joe arrives home, his parrot mysteriously turns into anger that destroys the pot that makes the same bumpy cross symbol drawn on the ground that spills on the floor. Joe sees the dragonflies flying out the window, and for a moment sees Emily grab her outside the same window. Joe's neighbor, Miriam Belmont, tried to persuade her to come true again. Instead, he went to Sister Madeline, a controversial nun who investigated the near-death experience. Sister Madeline advised Joe that Emily did try to contact her from the other side.
The highlight was in the hospital when Joe was alone with a clinically dead patient. Joe heard his wife talking through the patient, calling her name, but no one believed her. He decided to sell his house and go on vacation. As he packed his wife's things, the light bulb in the room was burned down. When he came back with a new bulb, all the stuff he carried away suddenly returned to his hometown. He enters his kitchen where the map has opened, showing a mysterious curved cross symbol in several places. He learned from a friend that a swaying cross is a map symbol for a waterfall. Joe remembered and found a picture of his wife posing in front of a waterfall with a rainbow behind her.
He traveled to the South American region where his wife died. Pilot Joe, Victor, took him to a victim's grave near a tribal village. Joe shows her a picture of his wife and asks the guide if he knows where his wife is buried. They began to argue with each other that he should be taken to the village. Joe's attention then turns to the village and he runs to it. He came to the cliff and saw the bus far under the water. Joe jumps into the river and enters the semi-flooded bus, causing the bus to shift and become completely drowned. Joe was trapped inside but calm as the bright lights filled the bus and his wife appeared to him, grabbing his hand. Events of his final hours crossed in front of him, showing him safe from an early accident and being dragged to safety by nearby Yanomami villagers. He was then suddenly rescued from the bus by Victor.
Joe ran into the village only to be surrounded by angry indigenous people holding guns. He holds a picture of his wife. A real woman tells her that they can not save her body but they save her soul. Confused, he followed her to one of the huts, and inside was a baby girl in a basket. The son his wife escaped from the accident. The woman shows birthmarks to the child in dragonfly. As he embraces his daughter, he realizes what his wife wants to say.
The movie ends with Joe playing with his daughter, who is now a toddler, has the same wavy blond hair and who is the image of his wife.
