Hassle relaxation is the process by which animal prey is raised and fed nutritious food in order to provide that nutrient to the animal that is targeted by the prey. The term is most often used for the preparation of insects, such as crickets and mealworms, or rats used as food for reptile animals. Commercial-raised insects for pet trade itself have little nutritional value. By providing high-quality, food-eating animals before eating, they become more nutritious foods for predators.

Drum loading can be done by providing fruits, vegetables and cereals or nutritionally-produced diets. Some commercial products are available and enriched specifically for bowel loading. These products often include various combinations of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber.

Importance

Gum loading is considered most important if the main source of nutrients comes from insects. This is due to the fact that commercially raised insects are very poor in nutrients compared to wild counterparts. This is especially true for vitamin A, among many other nutrients.

Drum loading is considered less important when animals such as mice are used as prey. This is because the amount of energy that can be digested and other nutrients that mammals have in their tissues. This is also a less common practice when rats are fed, as it is usually preferred to feed dead prey from stores to protect predators from being bitten.

Method

The drum loading is designed to improve the nutrition of the prey body and to fill the gastrointestinal tract of prey with nutrients. As the term implies, gut loading is usually seen as a way to get essential nutrients into the reptile through digestive tract digestion of the prey. Both nutrient uptake methods are important because of the ability of prey to process nutrients into easily digestible forms for predators. For example, most prey can digest complex carbohydrates into other forms of nutrient energy that can be used by predators. However, the intestine contains nutrients such as calcium should not be digested by prey before death to be available to predators.
