King Ghidorah ( ?????? , Kingu Gidora ) is a movie monster from Toho's Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster (1964). Although Toho is officially a trademark character as King Ghidorah , this character was originally referred to as Ghidrah in some UK markets.

Although the design of King Ghidorah remains largely consistent throughout his appearance (winged winged golden wings with three heads and two tails), his original story varies from being a planet-eating dragon from outer space, a genetically engineered monster of the future, or a guardian of ancient Japan. Characters are usually described as the main enemies of Godzilla and Mothra, though it has one appearance as the last ally.

Although there are rumors that Ghidorah is meant to represent the threat posed by China, which at the time of the creation of the character has just developed a nuclear weapon, director Ishir? Honda denied the connection and stated that Ghidorah is just a modern take on Yamata no Orochi dragon.

Development

The initial idea for Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster came from Tomoyuki Tanaka, who also created Godzilla. Tanaka's inspiration comes from the illustrations of Lernaean Hydra in a book on Greek Mythology, and Orochi's Japanese folklore. Tanaka is enamored with Godzilla's idea against a much-headed serpent, but considers 7-8 heads to be excessive, and thus the number of heads is reduced to three.

The final version is a three-headed, sleeveless dragon with large wings, two tails and comes from outer space. Screenwriter Shinichi Sekizawa insists that the Ghidorah suit is made using lightweight silicone-based materials to provide greater mobility to the wearer. The final Ghidorah design was built by special effects artist Teizo Toshimitsu, which was originally painted green to further differentiate it from Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra, but turned it into gold at the urging of Eiji Tsuburaya, after his assistant noted that a creature from Venus, the "golden planet", Ghidorah was supposed to be color it.

The monster shirt itself was built by Akira Watanabe, and worn by Shoichi Hirose, who also played King Kong in Toho King Kong vs Godzilla . Hirose stooped down in the Ghidorah costume, holding the iron rod for balance, while the mastermind would control his head, tail, and wings outside the camera like a doll. The monster's heads are each equipped with a remote-controlled motor, which is connected to the operator through a wire extending from the back of the suit.

The show as Ghidorah proved challenging to Hirose, because he had to set the timing of his moves in a way that would not contradict the head and wings operated separately, because it would produce a tangled wire. Due to the weight of the suit, often the wires above it are bent. A special effect is added because the creature is capable of emitting a destructive "gravitational pole", like lightning from its mouth and producing wind power from its wings.

Although the main role of King Ghidorah in the film plot, the characters are given a bit of screen time, as Hirose has fallen out with special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, who never forgave Hirose for accepting a Hollywood deal, and then hired Susumu Utsumi to play King Ghidorah after < Astro-Monster Invasion . In the film, King Ghidorah is given a darker golden color, and his movements both on land and in the air are more fluid than when Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, as a special effect the crew possesses. at the time learning from the lack of previous depictions of the creature.

In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, the character's hair ruffs around his head were replaced by horns, as it proved difficult for special effects teams to place at the top of individual hair strands to record the folks who escaped from monsters. Special effects director Koichi Kawakita initially planned to make each of Ghidorah's heads fire a different colored beam, but this was eventually removed for the classic yellow color.

For Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monster All-Out Attack, director Sh? Suke Kaneko originally planned to use Varan as Godzilla's main antagonist, but was pressured by Toho chairman Isao Matsuoka to use more King Ghidorah recognizable and profitable, as the previous film in the franchise, Godzilla x Megaguirus, featuring original and foreign antagonists, is a box office and critical failure. To emphasize Ghidorah's heroic role in the film, the size of the creature was greatly reduced, and played by Akira Ohashi, who moved the creature's head as a hand puppet.

Sh? wa era (1964-1973)

In the debut film Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Ghidorah is described as an ancient space entity responsible for the destruction of the Venusian civilization, five thousand years before the film. His attempt to destroy the Earth was thwarted by the combined efforts of Godzilla, Rodan and Mothra. The next Sh'wa-era films will portray Ghidorah as a pawn of various alien races seeking to conquer the Earth.

King Ghidorah also appeared in the fifth and sixth episodes of the Zone Fighter television series, where he revealed that it was a creation of the alien Garoga. Heisei_era_ (1991-1998) "> Era Heisei (1991-1998)

In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), this creature's backstory is completely visualized: it originates as a trio of genetically engineered creatures called "Dorat" owned by 23rd-century members of the Equal Environment Earth Union, a group dedicated to equalize the powers of the Earth countries. Seeking to stop Japan's global economic dominance in their timeline by converting Dorats to King Ghidorah through nuclear exposure, Earth Unionists hoped to plant Dorats on Lagos Island during the 1954 H-bomb test there. Before doing so, they remove the dinosaurs which will eventually become Godzilla from the island, so the resulting Ghidorah King will be able to attack Japan without resistance. In 1992, Earth Union released Ghidorah to Japan, but he was defeated by a re-created Godzilla. The wounded Ghidorah King was abandoned under the sea for two centuries before being equipped with a robotic part by an abandoned Earth Unionist and sent back to 1992 as Mecha-King Ghidorah to stop Godzilla's rampage. This version of King Ghidorah is described by Hurricane Ryu.

In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993), the head of the robot Mecha-King Ghidorah was rescued by the UN Godzilla Countermeasures Center (UNGCC) and reverse engineered to create Mechagodzilla.

In the Birth of Mothra III (1998) King Ghidorah is described as an extraterrestrial creature that landed on earth during the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era and destroyed the dinosaurs by consuming their life energy. Ghidorah left Earth and returned in modern times to feed humans. Mothra failed to defeat the monsters and travel back to Cretaceous to kill Ghidorah retroactively. Mothra defeated the younger Ghidorah, but the discontinued monster's tail enabled him to regenerate back into his adult form in modern times. Mothra eventually killed the monster by transforming into a new form: "Armor Mothra". This version of King Ghidorah is played by Tsutomu Kitagawa. Millennium Era (2001)

In Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Monster Monster All-Out Attack , Ghidorah is described as one of three Guardian Yamatos, dating back 1,000 years before the film. Originally an antagonist, Ghidorah was imprisoned on Mount Fuji, only to be revived in 2001 to stop the destruction of Godzilla in Tokyo. Ghidorah was defeated, but later revived and empowered by Mothra's allies. This version of King Ghidorah is played by Akira Ohashi.

The MonsterVerse Era (2019 -)

In 2014, Legendary Pictures announced that they had acquired rights to King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan of Toho for use in their MonsterVerse. King Ghidorah, along with Rodan and Mothra, was introduced to the MonsterVerse at Kong: Skull Island (2017) in the Post-credit scene depicting cave paintings from all three monsters, including Godzilla, in a recording demonstrated to James Conrad and Mason Weaver.

In April 2018, Jason Liles, Alan Maxson, and Richard Dorton were cast to give the motion capture show to King Ghidorah, with Liles doing the middle head while Maxson and Dorton will do the side head while the others will do the body.

Ability

Throughout the appearance of the creature, the only consistent ability is to fly and the capacity to fire the "gravity beam" from his mouth. At Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster , the first incarnation is shown through space within a meteor capable of generating a magnetic field. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah featuring the robot version - Mecha-King Ghidorah - equipped with grappling wires and a mechanical arm that can emit electricity and be able to lift Godzilla.

In , King Ghidorah gets the energy from eating the victims and can build the dome to accommodate his victims for future consumption. It is also described as being able to fire lightning from its wings and regenerate its entire body from disconnected body parts. Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: The Giant Monsters All-Out Attack shows versions that can shock the enemy through his teeth and can gain power by absorbing the spirit of dead monsters, allowing him to form a capable energy shield from deflecting the heat rays Godzilla atom.

Reception

The character has been well received and is considered the most famous enemy of Godzilla. WatchMojo.com listed King Ghidorah as # 1 in their "Top 10 Godzilla Villains" list, and # 6 on their "Big 10 Giant Movie Monster" list, while IGN enrolled the creature as # 2 on the "Top 10 Monster Film Japan" list. " A similar view is expressed in Paste , which lists Ghidorah as # 5 on his "10 Best Dragons of the Movie", describing it as "probably the most deadly animal in all Godzilla's knowledge".

Godzilla historian Steve Ryfle criticized the design of Ghidorah at Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, citing his rigid motion and Rodan puncture, and notes that it does not stray enough from the original design of Eiji Tsuburaya.
