Plot

On Berk, a Viking village located on a remote island where the Komodo dragons regularly steal cattle, Hiccup, the awkward five-year-old son of the village chief, Stoick the Vast, works as a blacksmith apprentice. Because he was too small and weak to fight dragons, he instead exhibited a mechanical device under his apprenticeship with Gobber, a senior blacksmith, although his inventions often failed to function or backfire. During one attack, Hiccup fires Night Fury, a very rare and dangerous dragon, with his ball launcher; he later finds him in the jungle trapped in the bolas, but finds that he can not bring himself to kill the dragon, he instead frees him.

Stoick gathers the fleet to find the dragon's nest, entering Hiccup in the dragon training class taught by Gobber. Hiccup returns to the forest to find the remaining Night Fury; he realized the dragon could not fly well because of its lame tail fins. Hiccup befriends the dragon, gradually taming him and giving him the name 'Toothless' because of his retractable teeth. Feeling guilty for paralyzing Toothless, Hiccup finally makes a harness and a fin prosthetic that allows him to guide the dragon in flight.

By observing Toothless's behavior, Hiccup became increasingly adept at subjugating conquer dragons during nonviolent training, amazing his friends but causing Astrid, a formidable Viking girl, targeted by Hiccup, became increasingly suspicious of his behavior. Astrid finally found out that he was training Toothless. Hiccup took him for a flight to show his connection with the dragon before he could tell the village. Toothless suddenly brings the couple to a dragon's den where they find a giant dragon called Red Death, 2 that feeds on a smaller dragon unless they bring it stolen animals; the couple realizes that the dragon has attacked Berk under his control as opposed to their own free will. Meanwhile, Stoick's fleet arrives at home unsuccessfully, though he is cheered by Hiccup's unexpected success in dragon training.

Back in the village, Hiccup, after winning dragon training, was given the task of killing a Monster Nightmare monsters; he, however, subjugated him in front of his father rather than killing him in an attempt to prove that the dragon was harmless. However, Stoick accidentally made the dragon attack. A toothless attempt to protect Hiccup in the next panic but captured by Viking in the process. Hiccup accidentally revealed to Stoick that Toothless was able to find a dragon's lair; Stoick did not recognize his son and set off to nest with a chained Toothless to lead ship as a guide.

The power of the Viking attack locates and destroys the dragon's nest opening, allowing most of the dragons to fly out but also resurrect the Red Death, immediately extending the attack power. Hiccup, Astrid, and his comrades flew on a training dragon from Berk, fired for the attack troops and turned his attention to the Red Death. Hiccup nearly drowned trying to break his teeth without teeth, but Stoick saved both of them, making peace with his son. Working together, Toothless and Hiccup destroyed the Red Death; Hiccup, however, was injured in the fight, losing his lower left leg and needing a prosthesis. Hiccup regains consciousness about Berk to find himself admired among tribes and by Astrid, with a Viking and a harmonious living dragon.

Production

The book series by Cressida Cowell began to come to the attention of executives at DreamWorks Animation in 2004. Starting his success at Over the Hedge , producer Bonnie Arnold was immediately attracted to the newly acquired property. He continued to focus on the project as time went on, and when DreamWorks Animation co-president Bill Damaschke asked what he wanted to do next, he chose "How to Train Your Dragon".

In the initial development, the plot followed the original novel closely, but about half way through the production of Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, Disney's writers Lilo & amp; Stitch , takes over as co-director and it's changed. The original plot is described as, "very loyal to the book", but is considered too "cute" and "weird" and directed towards a demographic that is too young, according to Baruchel. In the novel, the Hiccup dragon, Toothless, is a Common or Garden Dragon, a small type. In the film, Toothless is Night Fury, the rarest of all dragons, and big enough to be used as a fly for Hiccup and Astrid. The filmmakers hired cinematographer Roger Deakins (known to often collaborate with the Coen brothers) as visual consultants to help them with the lighting and overall look of the film and to "add to the feel of live action". Extensive research was conducted to illustrate the two flights, as the directors knew that they would be the biggest draw of the 3D effects of the film, and the fire, given that animation could escape the limitations seen in live action films, where propane flames were commonplace easier to extinguish. Dragon design ensures to create funny and innovative animals compared to other dragon fiction. Toothless in particular tries to combine the various properties of the dragon in a design inspired by black panther, which also has large ears and eyes to convey emotions better.

The directors made sure to monetize the skills of second player improvisations - Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jonah Hill, Kristen Wiig and T.J Miller - by often bringing them together in recording sessions.
