Development

The game was first announced under the working title of Dragon Ball Game Project Age 2011 in the early May issue of Weekly Shonen Jump magazine . This announcement features several screenshots with Goku and Vegeta, in normal form and Super Saiyan, highlighting game mechanics. The announcement states that the game will showcase the incredible visuals and will be released in Japan in the fall of 2011 for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game consoles. A few days later the North American branch of Namco Bandai released a press statement announcing that they will be releasing games all over North America. They also confirmed that Spike will return to work on the game. The June issue of V Jump magazine featured several Goku and Vegeta screenshots, in its Oozaru form, demonstrating the mechanical type of button time action. It also confirms the return of environmental mechanics that can be undermined from the game of Budokai Tenkaichi and Raging Blast before.

In the next Namco Bandai press release, it was announced that the official English game title is Ultimate Tenkaichi and that its release date is October 25, while the European release date is announced to be 28th October. The title was chosen by fans through a survey conducted by Namco Bandai along with four other possible options. In response, Namco Bandai's marketing president, Carlson Choi expressed their reason for outreach by describing the fans as "the world's most passionate anime player and anime player." Then in July, it was announced that the game would not only include the return of GT characters to the list, but also includes the character creation and customization modes. The August 8th edition of Shonen Jump displays a screenshot of story mode, featuring a kind of free-range mechanics similar to that found in Budokai 3 and then Budokai Tenkaichi game, where players can explore the entire planet from the sky and land in certain areas. The following edition V Jump reveals that the game will be released under the title of Ultimate Blast in Japan, with a release date for December 8th.

In early September, more details are expressed in the character creation mode called "Hero Mode". This mode gives players the option to customize their chosen characters with a variety of existing and original clothes and hairstyles, in addition to the ability to change and customize their color schemes. The following edition Shonen Jump revealed that the Japanese release will include the introduction of a new opening in traditional 2D animation set for the song "Cha-La Head-Cha-La" by Hironobu Kageyama (First Opening Dragon Ball Z Song in Japan ).

Reception

Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi Utama accepts mixed criticism. IGN gave the game 7.5 out of 10, praising the graphics and battles, but criticizing the storytellers and the recurring nature of the battle. GameSpot delivers 4.0 games out of 10, praises the graphics, but hates the game battle system because there is no sense of originality; bosses are fighting because of the frustrating phase of Rapid Time Events; and character building systems due to the limited number of items supplied. Destructoid gives the 7.5 game the proverb "Although the battle can be a bit on the recurring side, there is still a bit of satisfaction when you wipe out the enemy with the power of canyon-creating moves. There's plenty here for the fans to enjoy, and while the story may be simplified for new franchise enthusiasts, I really can not recommend it to anyone but hardcore.
