After graduating he returned to Australia and started working in the Australian film and TV industry, working on the soap opera E Street. While working at E Street in 1993, he started working with Tim Chappel. Together they design a bizarre costume for LGBT comedy film Stephan Elliott Australia The Adventure of Priscilla, the Queen of the Desert . Among the strange costumes they design for the film is a dress made up of many pairs of pink flip-flops. He studied the Australian drag queen and their clothes and commented, "I like the fact that you can do many things without much budget."
Their costumes won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design at the 67th Academy Awards, Best Costume in the UK Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), and Best Costume Design at the Australian Film Institute Awards. The Annual Motion Picture Guide 1995, which covers 1994 films, says, "Oscar-winning costumes by Lizzy Gardiner and Tim Chappel are very inspired and start from the weird to the unspeakable."
She gained world attention at the Academy Awards in 1995 when she took her award by wearing an unusual outfit made up of 254 expired American Express Gold cards. The dress was originally made for the film but was not legitimate by American Express. However, once the dress is worn by Gardiner himself, American Express sees its marketing potential and wants to show it off throughout its travel office in the United States. The dress was auctioned for charity in March 1999 for $ 12,650, with proceeds going to the American Foundation for AIDS research. It has been called one of the worst Oscar dresses of all time.
In answer to the question of her work on the gay movie Priscilla Adventure, Desert Queen and star lesbian Bound, starring Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon, returning to the back (Gardiner identifies as straight) he said, "It never occurred to me that sexuality is a problem, Australia has grown dramatically in the last five years, and we are a nation of inmates, so we're all sort of a bastard."
Gardiner has a biography entry in the book 1001 Australia You Need to Know .
He was selected as one of the arrivals for the Who's Who in Australia 2012 edition.
