The second generation Nexus 7 is a mini tablet computer co-developed by Google and Asus running the Android operating system. This is the third tablet in the Google Nexus series, the consumer consumer Android family marketed by Google and built by the original equipment manufacturer partners. Following the success of the original Nexus 7, the second generation of the device was released on July 26, 2013, four days earlier than the scheduled date due to early releases from various retailers. This tablet is the first device shipped with Android 4.3 version.

The second iteration of a 7 inch (180 mm) tablet, code named "Razor", has various upgrades from previous generations, including a 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, 2 GB memory, 1920 × 1200 pixel display (323 pixels per inch 127 ppcm), dual camera (1.2 MP front, 5 MP rear), stereo speakers, built-in Qi wireless charger, and SlimPort (via micro USB connector) capable of full high-definition video output to an external display.

Features

Software

Nexus 7 is the first device that has shipped with Android version 4.3 ("Jelly Bean"). All Nexus devices, including Nexus 7, run a free version of Android from manufacturers or modifications to wireless carriers (for example, dedicated graphical user interfaces or 'skins' like TouchWiz and HTC Sense) commonly included on other Android devices. The Nexus product also features an open bootloader, which enables device rooting, allowing users access to privileged controls over the Android environment, which in turn allows for further development or modification of the operating system or replacement of firmware of the device. The update for Android 4.4 was released in November 2013, followed by other updates to Android 4.4.2 a month later and finally updates for Android 4.4.3 in June 2014 and 4.4.4 in July. Only the Wi-Fi variant of Nexus 7 is one of two devices where the Android L developer preview is officially available, with the other being Nexus 5. Android 5.0 "Lollipop" was released in November 2014 for The Wi-Fi Version only. In July 2015, Android 5.1.1 was released to Nexus 7, which contains Stagefright bug fixes.

In November 2015, Nexus 7 began receiving Android 6.0 "Marshmallow" updates worldwide. After that Nexus 7 became one of the first devices to get Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update in December 2015. Nexus 7 (2013) will not receive the official Android 7.0 Nougat update, which means that Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow is the last officially supported version Android for devices. LineageOS is supported on the device and provides Android 7.1 Nougat.

Hardware and design

Nexus 7 (ASUS-1A005A) is thinner and lighter than its predecessor. It is manufactured by Asus, and is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064-1AA SoC, (1.5-GHz quad-core Krait 300 and Adreno 320 GPU, clocked at 400 MHz). The new SoC Nexus 7 is believed to be a variation of the Qualcomm 600 Snapdragon processor (branded as "S4 Pro") which is underclocked to 1.5Ã, GHz. It has 2 GB of RAM (twice the previous generation) and is available with internal flash memory storage of 16 GB or 32 GB. Like all current generation Google Nexus devices, there is no option for additional storage via a micro SD expansion card. Nexus 7 2013 natively supports OTG micro USB cables to USB flash drives, and USB SD card readers via Nexus Media Importer for read/write (including NTFS format). Battery reportedly lasts up to 9 hours of HD video playback and 10 hours of web search or e-reading. Battery capacity has been lowered from 4,325 mAh in Nexus 7 2012, to 3,950 mAh in version 2013. Despite this reduction, battery life typically outperforms the original due to hardware and software optimization.

The Nexus 7 screen now has a resolution of 1920ÃÆ'â € "1200 pixels (960dp ÃÆ'â €" 600dp). The previous model has a resolution of 1280ÃÆ' â € "800. In addition, the contrast ratio of the panel and color of the gamut is reportedly superior to the previous model.

Nexus 7 was originally available only in black, but in December 2013 white options were added.
