race tracks (or "horse races", "race tracks" or "racing circuits") are facilities built for racing vehicles, athletes, or animals (eg horse racing or greyhound racing). The race track can also feature grandstands or concourses. Racetracks are also used in animal propulsion studies. Some motorsport tracks are called speedways .

Horse Racing is a permanent facility or building. Racecourse is an alternative term for horse racing tracks, found in countries such as Britain, India, Australia, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. The race tracks built for bicycles are known as velodromes . Circuit is a common alternative term for horse racing, considering the circuit configuration of most race tracks, allowing the race to occur over several rounds.

A race course , as opposed to racecourse , is a non-permanent track for sports, especially running, water sports, street racing, or rally. Many sports that are usually held in racetracks can also occur on temporary tracks, such as the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula One.

History

There is some evidence of racetracks developed in some ancient civilizations. The most advanced ancient pavements are the hippodromes of Ancient Greece and the circus of the Roman Empire. Both structures are designed for horse racing and horse-drawn carriages. The Maximus Circus stadium in Ancient Rome can accommodate 200,000 spectators.

The racing facility existed during the Middle Ages, and there was a record of the general racetrack that opened at Newmarket in London in 1174. In 1780 the Earl of Derby created a horse racing course on his estate at Epsom; Derby England continues to be held there today. Racecourses in the British Isles are based on grasses, known as grass tracks. In the United States, the race track is ground.

With the advent of cars in the late nineteenth/early twentieth century, racetracks were designed to fit the nature of the engine powered. The earliest track is a modified horse racing course. The race car at the facility began in September 1896, at Narragansett Park in Cranston, Rhode Island. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in August 1909.

Beginning in the early 1900s, motorcycle races were run over, a high wooden race track called board tracks. During the 1920s, many races on the AAA Championship circuit were run on such board tracks. Modern racetracks are designed with the security of the audience to be paramount, after the incident of the audience and the victim's marsal track. This often involves run-off areas, obstacles, and high fences.

Configuration

Some racetracks offer little in the way of permanent infrastructure apart from tracks; others include spectator facilities such as the stands, hospitality or facilities for competitors, such as pit lane and garage, meadows and stables. Some racetracks are incorporated into larger venues or complexes, combining golf courses, museums, hotels and conference centers. Some racetracks are small enough to be confined indoors, for sports like motocross, cycling, and athletics.

Many racetracks are multi-purpose, allowing different types of sports on the same track, or combining multiple tracks in one place. Tracks that usually run are incorporated in general use or football stadiums, whether they are permanently visible or covered by a stand or field.

Many horse and motorsport trails can be configured, allowing different routes or sections. Some places contain smaller tracks inside larger ones, with access tunnels and bridges for spectators. Some racetracks combine short courses and longer courses that use shorter, usually straight main sections, such as Brands Hatch. Le Mans car races are centered on smaller permanent circuits within the complex.

Motorsport

Racetracks are primarily designed for competition through speed, presenting a specified line or final post, and sometimes even a set of specified time points that divide the track into the time sector. Some sports only measure endurance, or how long a competitor can race. Racetracks can host individual sports or teams. Racetracks can show start rolling, or a fixed start, with related equipment (starting blocks, cages, trap wheels etc.) They always display the pit lane, and usually equipment time.

Track layout

Some racetracks have oval shapes, often banked, allowing an almost universal audience view or high speed racing (cycling, stock car), but are often criticized for lack of excitement; it dominates in North America. The notable is the NardÃÆ'² where high-speed manufacturer testing is common, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Some oval tracks are variations on oval shapes, for practical reasons or for introducing difficulties such as Talladega (a tri-oval). Most racetracks have tortuous circuits with many curves, chicanes and high changes, to allow challenges in skills for competitors, especially motocross and touring car racing - these tend to dominate in most parts of the world, but especially in Europe.

Road series

The flat motorsport course is sometimes called the 'road circuit', which stems from the fact that the earliest racing circuit is just a closed public street. The correct road circuit is still in use, eg. The Australian GP has been run in Adelaide and continues to be in Melbourne in the city's usual streets. The most famous are the Monaco GP, and the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium. Some racetracks are specially configured in a straight length, ie drag racing. Some races will be held just above the straight sections of the track (some horse racing and athletic running).

Converted airfield

The explosion in motorsport raged after WW2, when many airfields, especially in Britain, were left without further use. The most famous British song - Silverstone - is one after becoming WW2 Class A Airfield, such as Castle Combe and Goodwood Circuit's. The long runway is perfect for drag strips such as the Santa Pod Raceway, and the circuit layout usually creatively combines sections of the runway and the surrounding perimeter taxiways. This type of track also appeared on the popular automotive event Top Gear, which was filmed at Dunsfold Aerodrome, in Surrey, England.
