St. George Illawarra Dragons is an Australian professional rugby league football club, representing the territory of Illawarra and St.. George in New South Wales. The club has been competing in the National Rugby League since 1999 after a joint venture was formed between St. George Dragons (est. 1921) and Illawarra Steelers (est. 1982). They were formally formed as the first joint-venture club on 23 September 1998 and remain the only cross-town team in the NRL. The team has headquarters and league clubs in both Wollongong and Sydney Kogarah suburbs, and train and play games regularly at WIN Stadium in Wollongong, as well as in Jubilee Oval at Kogarah. Since 2006 the club has been jointly owned by St George Dragons 50%, Illawarra Steelers 25% and WIN Corporation 25%.

The Dragons reached the Grand Final in their first season in 1999, losing to Melbourne Storm. St. George Illawarra was one of only two clubs (the other being Sydney Roosters in 1908) to finish runners-up in his inaugural season. The St. George Illawarra Dragons is also a field team in local competition in St. George and Illawarra. In 2010, Dragons won its second consecutive second premiere and became the first team to be awarded J. J. Giltinan Shield in successive years since the National Rugby League was formed in 1998.

The Dragons won the 2010 NRL Grand Final against Sydney Rooster, beating them 32-8 at ANZ Stadium, Sydney. They then won the 2011 World Club Challenge, defeating the Wigan Warriors 21-15 at DW Stadium in England. With the World Club Challenge victory, the club became the first Australian team since the Brisbane Broncos in 1992-3 to win the small prime minister, prime minister and World Club Challenge simultaneously.

History

After the Super League war in the mid-1990s, and the results of the split competition in 1997, Illawarra Steelers found themselves struggling financially and apparently would not survive after 1999. George Dragons financed a proposal for a merger that would see St George Illawarra Dragons playing at Kogarah and Wollongong. Essentially, St George will provide money while Illawarra will provide the junior and broader fan base. With the intention of NRL to rationalize the competition from 20 teams to 14 teams and with $ 4M incentives and relax salary requirements for mergers, Dragons and Steelers ensure their survival by forming the League's first merger on September 23, 1998.

David Waite and Andrew Farrar (1999-2002)

The combined entity becomes a new concept in the Australian rugby league, the public watching closely to anticipate success or failure. No one is sure how the top players sourced from the combined two feeder clubs will perform as they run into the field. They did not succeed in their first game, losing to Parramatta Eels 20-10, but in the 4th round they started forming cohesion and will continue to reach the top 8 in the competition ladder at the end of the regular season. In the semi-final, Dragons win against Melbourne Storm at Olympic Park, before returning to Sydney to dispose of Sydney's Rooster and Cronulla Sharks to reach the Grand Final.

In 1999, the Grand Final of the Dragons led 14-0 at halftime ahead of the 107,999 world record record. A fairy tale maiden title in their first year seems destined to be true; something from an ad to another club considering the merger option, but the Storm recovered from a poor start and got into the final minutes of the match with the Dragons taking the lead on 18-14. The Dragons were forced to do a falling kick from their own goal line, and on fifth tactic Brett Kimmorley kicked high into the Dragon's corner of the field. When Storm winger Craig Smith caught the ball over the goal line, he collapsed in a tackle by Jamie Ainscough and lost the ball. Referee Bill Harrigan was suspended to the video referee who ruled a penalty with the reason the contact had been made with the head, giving Melbourne a 20-18 advantage and the title of prime minister.

In the 2000 season even though they had a bad start, and in Round 5, Dragon recorded their worst defeat for the club, losing 70-10 against Melbourne Storm. This is the first game both teams played against each other since the 1999 grand final, and played at MCG. On May 3rd for the surprise and surprise of fans and club officials, Anthony Mundine announced his retirement from the club and rugby league in general immediately to pursue a career in boxing. The Dragons did not go well in the first half of the 2000 season, and lead coach David Waite was replaced by assistant coach Andrew Farrar. Immediately after the coach's replacement, Dragon recorded their best wins. They beat the New Zealand Warriors 54-0 in round 14 at WIN Stadium, with debutant Amos Roberts scoring 22 points (one trial and nine goals) for every player on debut. The Dragons, however, missed out from the final series, and came 9. Despite their poor season, Trent Barrett was awarded the Dally M. Medal

>

In 2003, Nathan Brown, the first entity number 9 to join the coach position, became the youngest non-playing trainer in the history of the prime minister at the age of 29 years. Dragons finish the 10th season. Nathan Brown was also involved in a side incident when he slapped Trent Barrett in Wollongong during a game against Manly, and was issued a $ 5,000 fine.

2004 saw the last season of scoring talent Nathan Blacklock. A remarkable scoreline is seen in a big 25 bout with Manly. Trailing 34-10 after 53 minutes Dragons return to win the 36-34 match. This is the second biggest comeback in the history of the Australian Rugby League. Finishing 5th, Dragons crashed out in the first round of the final after losing a tense 30-31 to fourth-place Penrith.

In 2005, after their worst start to the season (losing 5 of their first 6 games), the St. George Illawarra took second place in the closed season on the stairs at the end of the 2005 season, just behind the small Parramatta prime minister. on the difference of points. After reaching the final, they beat local rivals Cronulla Sharks 28-22 in the quarter-finals of the final series even though Dragons eventually fell 12-20 to final champion Wests Tigers in the Preliminary Final. The Dragons broke the record at WIN Stadium twice in the 2005 season. First against rivals Sydney Roosters and then in their home quarterfinal match against Cronulla Sharks.

In early 2006, WIN Television Network bought a 25% stake in Illawarra Steelers Club for $ 6.5 million, removing most of Illawarra's debt to St. George. This formalized strong support network has been shown to the Steelers in years gone by and ensures that Wollongong continues to host world-class rugby league matches.

After a poor start to the 2006 season, the Dragons made a 7-game midseason winning streak. This was followed by a slump of form, with five consecutive defeats, only to return to form with victory over the Tiger, and to continue this positive form towards the final. The Dragons ended the regular season in sixth position.

In the final campaign, St George Illawarra faces the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium in the first round, the Dragons winning a 20-4 game. In the second half, they met the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at the Sydney Football Stadium which won 28-0. In the grand final qualifiers, they play the Melbourne Storm, where the Dragons dropped 24-10 bowed out the 2006 season. Dragons can take solace from the fact that they beat the prime minister, Brisbane, three times during the 2006-12-26 season at Wollongong in Ronde 4, 18-16 at Suncorp Stadium in Round 15 and the final qualifying match previously mentioned.

The 2007 season saw an early injury to Mark Gasnier in a Charity Shield game against South Sydney Rabbitohs creating another bad start for the Dragons. Combined with the loss of key players like Luke Bailey, Trent Barrett and Shaun Timmins out of season, Dragons faced newcomer NRL, Gold Coast Titans, in Round 1. The Dragons won a historic 20-18 game but lost 6 matches after leaving the Dragon sitting at 15th place on the NRL Ladder. This is a very inexperienced dragon team that seems destined for the season of injury badly wracked. However, in Round 17 (vs Canberra Raiders at WIN Stadium), Dragons scored four times more points than their previous game average, winning the match 58-16, matching their highest score and their biggest win in three years. The Dragons season ended in a 28-24 defeat of Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at the Brookvale Oval, ending in 13th place, the lowest finish to date.

2008 saw the end of an era, with coach Nathan Brown's contract not being renewed after a poor start to the season, winning 1 of their first 6 games. The club received a boost in May when former international doubles player Wendell Sailor joined the team. Some famous players depart at the end of the year including Jason Ryles and captain Mark Gasnier. The Dragons finished the season in 7th place, but they lost in the first round of finals until the prime minister Manly (whom they beat 20-18 in the 11th round) 34-6 at the Brookvale Oval ended another disappointing season. The era under Brown is one of frustration for Dragons fans, because there is high hopes for strong parties, but ultimately no prime minister.

Wayne Bennett (2009-2011)

2009, new season new coach and land sponsor, WIN in Jubilee Oval. Several new faces joined the club, including Jeremy Smith, Darius Boyd, Neville Costigan, Michael Weyman, and Luke Priddis. The season opener against the Storm ends with the gold point of losing extra thrilling time (17-16). Round 3 set a new crowd record with victory to win the Jubilee against Cronulla.

They were consistently placed first on the ladder of the competition in 2009, contributed by consecutive successive wins from seven games since their victory against the North Queensland Cowboys on 14 June. They lost first place after losing three consecutive games while Canterbury Bulldogs won all the games in that period, but remained in the top three positions. However, in the final round of the regular 2009 season, St. George Illawarra defeated Parramatta Eels 37-0, a game in which winger Brett Morris earned a hat-trick and man of the match honors, while the Bulldogs lost 34 -12 to Wests Tigers. In the same game, St. George Illawarra, at five-eight Jamie Soward surpassed Harry Bath's record for most points in a season by St. George. As a result, Dragons won the small prime minister for the first season of 2009 and Wayne Bennett at the club, but the team were knocked out of the finals after losing their final two games, becoming the first prime minister since 1993. In the first game they were lowered in front of the full Jubilee Stadium crowded, before traveling to face the former Bennett team. The Broncos defeated the Dragon. The 2010 season saw the club lose seven games - the same tally as in the 2009 round-back season, against the wood spooners finally Melbourne Storm, 2008 Eagles Sea premier Manly-Warringah, their timeless bogey team Canberra Raiders, 2003 prime minister Penrith Panthers in round 17 , Gold Coast Titans in extra round at round 20, old team Bennett, Broncos Brisbane in round 21 and second time to Canberra Raiders in round 24 big. The team has been placed first since the fifth round.

The team won the second consecutive second prime minister (the first NRL team to do so since the start of the NRL in 1998) with a win against Newcastle Knights in the second round of the 2010 NRL season. The Dragons have led the competition from round five to the final round, spending 21 weeks successively at the top of the stairs and therefore spent the longest time on the ladder in NRL history (excluding Melbourne Storm).

St George Illawarra met Manly in the first week of the 2010 finals and produced a 28-0 win. The Dragons then defeated Wests Tigers 13-12 with Jamie Soward kicking a winning field goal for a place in the 2010 NRL Grand Final.

In the NRL Grand Final 2010, Dragons beat the Sydney Rooster 32-8, to secure the club's first grand final victory. The Dragons overcame a poor first-half performance to draw a thrilling win from his hat. This victory made the final record of the grand final of Wayne Bennett in 7 wins from 8 and thus went on Brian Smith scored a great bad record of 4 losses from 4. Darius Boyd won a premier with Bennett and Brisbane Broncos in 2006, winning the Clive Churchill Medal to the best on the ground in the match.

St George Illawarra started the 2011 season with a pre-season win in trials over Canterbury and South Sydney in Charity Shield. The club also claimed its first World Club Challenge Championship, beating the Wigan Warriors 21-15 at DW Stadium. In Round 14 of 2011, the Dragons have won 10 straight (excluding a 14-14 draw against Parramatta in Round 13).

It was announced in March 2011 that Bennett will be leaving the Dragons after the 2011 season, signing a four-year deal with Newcastle Knights from the 2012 season and beyond. Steve Price was named as his successor. Steve Price and Paul McGregor (2012 - present)

2012 saw the club with a new coach. The Dragons almost out in place of the Final, ending in 9th position. Some famous players depart from the club at the end of the season, including Ben Hornby and Dean Young, both of whom are retired from the sport. The beginning of the 2013 season saw the arrival of several key acquisitions, namely Gerard Beale of Broncos and Tyson Frizell from Cronulla Sharks. This season was disrupted by an inconsistent form, in addition to injuries and speculation about Price's future at the club. After winning three straight games on the lead up to the annual Anzac Day match with Rooster, it was announced that the Price would be signed for another year with an option for second at the exile club. Although the club believes in the price and also the arrival of defender Josh Dugan from Canberra - in mid-season transfer, the club can not string together with a consistent performance and end the year in 14th position.

Five-eighth star Gareth Widdop joined the club for 2014, but in late May 2014, right after the signing of star Benji Marshall, the council fired Price as coach due to some embarrassing defeat to start the season. Assistant coach Paul McGregor was appointed as his successor until the end of the season, and was eventually employed full time after improved results. It peaked in the club back to the finals in 2015 and enjoyed a successful year.

In the 2017 NRL season, St George leads the competition after the first eight rounds before a dramatic slide that sees the club scoring just six wins for the rest of the season. In the final game of the regular season, St George plays against Canterbury with a win that ensures they are in the final spot and jumps in front of North Queensland. With less than ten minutes to play, St George was in front of the scoreboard before two quick attempts to give Canterbury a 26-20 victory.

Color and T-shirt

Name and Symbol

Team colors from St. George Illawarra Dragons is red and white, the color of both St. George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers. The combined entity logo is taken directly from St. George, with the addition of "Illawarra" to the bottom of the emblem. The emblem reflects the rich history of St George Dragons, including 11 remarkable prime ministers, and the club's future strength with Illawarra.

The name of the Dragons club, is a shortened version of "Dragonslayers", the nickname of the original St. George. This emblem has a red shield with the silhouette of St. George, overlaid with a white-style dragon, with the words "ST. GEORGE" and "ILLAWARRA" above and below each shield. Originally intended for St. George facing right and dragon facing left. It is one of the most recognizable logos in the Australian sports world.

Jerseys

When St George Illawarra Dragons was formed in 1998, it was decided that St George's jersey (first used in 1945), the famous "Red V" in white, would become the main jersey for a new club. The red color used is converted into a red tone used by the Steelers.

The alternate shirts originally used by clubs are the red and white horizontal lines, similar to St. George Jersey 1921 known as "blood and bandages". Since 2006, this Jersey has been booked for use as St George Illawarra Heritage Jersey for special occasions. The Jersey is worn during the Heritage Round, when the Dragons face the rough local rivals of RLFC Bulldogs.

In 2004 and 2005, the club used a jersey similar to the Steelers main jersey for the Heritage game, recognizing the history of rugby league in the Illawarra region, though not as a full-time alternative strip. This shirt is dominated red with white stripes on the arms. With Adidas producing the club's official merchandise from 2006, the generic red-dominated Adidas design with three white lines in the arm - was adopted as a full-time alternative strip; before another redesign in 2008, which better reflects the old Steelers jersey.

Reebok produced supporters and team kits from the 2010 season. Again Red V is the main jersey and the Alternative jersey is a red design with a white slash. XBlades became a major jersey supplier for the 2018 season and beyond.

Home page

The Dragons have two home yards, which reflect the club's shared nature:

  • Jubilee Oval (1999, 2003-07, 2009-present)
  • WIN Stadium (1999-present)

Half of the Dragons home matches are played in Jubilee Oval (formerly the home of St. George Dragons), while the rest of their home matches are played at the Wollongong Showground (formerly home ground of Illawarra Steelers).

The club has previously played Sydney home games outside of Sydney Football Stadium (2000-2002), Australian Stadium (2008) and Sydney Cricket Ground (on one occasion in 2011), due to redevelopment or unavailability of Jubilee Oval.

The club has taken their home advantage away from their usual place of origin to the Sydney Football Stadium for the ANZAC Club Match against Sydney Rooster in the 2004, 2006, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 seasons. In 2002 when the first game was held, the Sydney Football Stadium was, at the time, one of the main places of the Dragons home, while in 2008 the game was played at ANZ Stadium, a movement that was very unpopular among supporters.

Right Right Right Right Strategy

In 2013, the club signed a four-year agreement with NRL to move 4 of their 12 home games to one of Sydney's premier stadiums (Allianz Stadium, Sydney Cricket Field, ANZ Stadium).

Its strategic objective is to replicate the success of the annual game played against Sydney Roosters on ANZAC day. As part of this initiative, the club and NRL seek to introduce an annual Heritage Round match against South Sydney at SCG.

In 2017, the club announced that the NRL only provides three appropriate games to support this initiative for the 2017 season.

It was announced that from 2012 NRL season all matches (except for ANZAC clash Vs the Sydney Roosters and one other round) will be shared equally between Kogarah and Wollongong.

Club league

And has two administrative offices, St. George Illawarra is supported by two separate League clubs - one in each St George and Illawarra area.

George Dragons Leagues Club

Club St George Leagues is located on Princes Highway in Beverley Park close to the Jubilee Oval's northern home yard in Carlton. Founded in 1963, St. George was one of the first Super League clubs developed in the 60s and is often referred to as the Taj Mahal because of the use of white marble in the original building. Very few original buildings still exist today after extensive repairs and redesigning the entire club to make it one of the most appropriate clubs in Australia.

Club Clubs of Illawarra Steelers

Located in the midst of the City Beach area, Steelers Club is adjacent to WIN Entertainment Center and WIN Stadium. It was directly across the street from the Western Grandstand grounds. Founded in 1990, the club has struggled financially against the bigger and more popular league clubs in Wollongong, such as Collegians, Dapto Leagues Club, Wests Illawarra Leagues Club, and Shellharbour Workers Club in Shellharbour. However, after a massive restructuring of its operations, Steelers Club has had profitable trades over the last 12 months. Twenty percent of the club's premises are sold to Billionaire based in Bermuda and owner of WIN Corp., Bruce Gordon. Sales reached 2.6 million dollars.

Supporters

Dragon supporters mainly come from the local club area, the suburb of St. George in Sydney (Hurstville area, Rockdale, and Kogarah Council), and Illawarra on the southern coast of NSW. The St. George Illawarra Dragons also has many followers in southeast Queensland, as a large number of 'Red V' club members come from people in this area. The Dragons also have supporters from all over NSW, with the club receiving a record crowd at away games at ANZ Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park. In particular there is also the following great Dragon in Victoria, based around Melbourne and Geelong. It is understood that the club received support from NRL fans in other countries as well, largely because of the world-renowned Dragons running eleven prime ministers in a row in the 1950s and 1960s. Some important supporters of the team include Sally Fitzgibbons, John Stanley, Dave Gleeson, Morris Iemma, Graham Richardson, Barrie Unsworth, Ian McNamara, Stephanie Magiros, Josh Hazlewood, Moises Henriques, Bob Simpson, Mark Taylor, Kerry O'Keeffe, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Jurman, Billy Dib, Dib Jihad, Melissa Perrine, Tony Squires, Lara Pitt, Ken Rosewall, Mike Dalton, Drew Morphett, Matt Moran, John Hewson, John Howard, Mark Latham Robert McClelland and Brett Lee.

Rivalry

Because St. George enjoyed great success over the years, St George Illawarra Dragons has inherited some fierce competition, while also creating some new ones since forming a joint venture.

Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs

St George Illawarra has a fierce competition with its neighbor, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. The Bulldogs was founded in 1935, 14 years after St. George. St George produced a RL record of 91-6 defeat of Canterbury in 1935 but Canterbury enjoyed the first prime minister's success, but St.George recorded 11 premieres straight in the following years (1955-1966). It was also the Bulldogs who ended their Premiership run in 1967, when the Bulldog beat them by 1 point in the final to face Rabbitoh in the Grand Final. Since then, both clubs have led to the Premiership defeat in another, St George defeated the Bulldogs in 1979, Canterbury back in favor in 1985. Both sides are rivals in the NRL Heritage Round. Bulldogs and the Dragons also unofficially have territorial competition, with fans from both teams coming in large numbers around Kingsgrove, Arncliffe and Earlwood.

Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks

One of St. George Illawarra's fiercest competitors is their neighbor, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks. The Sharks were originally part of the George St George region, and the Shark is often referred to as the "little sister of St. George". The dragon has the same number of successes as the Shark, which also won one prime minister. In fact, since Dragons entered the competition in 1999, both Dragons and Sharks have finished higher than the other six each. Competition increased in 2005 when they met in the final at WIN Stadium sold out; Dragons win 28-22. Cronulla finished the 1999 season as a small prime minister, but the Dragons beat them 26-8 in the final to advance to the 1999 NRL Grand Final at Sharks' cost. The Dragons trailed 0-8 at halftime.

Both clubs have been accused of chasing players from others, and competing for fans in the same region. In 1999, CEO Cronulla inadvertently cut St. George Jersey after a game at the Toyota Stadium. During the Super League war, Cronulla-Sutherland was one of only 3 Sydney teams to join a rival competition, silencing farther than the Dragons fans (Both St George Dragons and Illawarra Steelers were loyal to ARL during the Super League War).

In 2009, former Dragons captain, Trent Barrett, switched to Shark after two years in the European Super League. In his return match to Kogarah in round 3, 2009, Barrett was injured and with him gone there was hope Cronulla had won the premiership (in the previous year, Sharks had finished the same-first) that year. Other players who have switched clubs include Lance Thompson and Jeremy Smith (Dragons to Sharks), Beau Scott, Sam Isemonger and Matt Bickerstaff (Sharks to Dragons) and Colin Best (Sharks to Dragons and then back again, in 2011). In other matches in 2009, Shark captain Paul Gallen was found guilty of racially criticizing Dragons while forwarding Mickey Paea.

South Sydney Rabbitohs

St. George won 15 premierships before joining Illawarra. In 2010 they won their first NRL prime minister as a joint entity. The South Sydney Rabbitohs has won most premiership with 21, the next Sydney Tasmanian Chicken on 13 premiership. The Rabbitohs and Dragons met several times in the grand final before the merger and became Northeast's neighbor St. George, having had many fierce encounters. The most significant competition of this competition is the Charity Shield, the pre-season fixture between the two sides abandoned during the 90s but revived after South Korea was reinserted into the NRL in 2002. [4]

Sydney Chicken

St George has another strong competition with Sydney Rooster. The inaugural start of St George was a 31-14 victory over the Easts in the NSWRFL 1941 Grand Final. During 1995, the Rooster had a secret discussion to join the Dragons, with the Dragons jersey and the emblem disappearing. Fans were angry, and attempts were canceled. St George Illawarra annually the ANZAC Club Game Contest against Rooster, a tradition dating back to the 1970s, but has been contested regularly since 2002. Dragons reached their first NRL prime minister by defeating the 32-8 Rooster in 2010 NRL Grand Last contested.

Brisbane Broncos

Prior to the joint-venture, St George and Illawarra had created strong competition with Brisbane in the early 1990s. St George and the Brisbane Broncos competed in the 1992 and 1993 Grand Final, creating fierce competition (see New League Rugby League in South Wales 1993). Also, Illawarra has produced some impressive performances against Brisbane, including the famous 1989 Panasonic Cup Final (won by Brisbane) and the 1992 Tooheys Challenge Cup Final (won by Illawarra).

The St George Illawarra Dragons had the longest winning streak against the Brisbane Broncos compared to other clubs (eight, from round 23, 2005 to round 4, 2009 inclusive, including one finals in 2006), for five years. With former Brisbane Broncos coach Wayne Bennett at the helm of St George Illawarra, and Wendell Sailor, a popular face in the NRL and former Bronco, the competition has only increased. In 2009, the Dragons defeated the Broncos in the early Suncorp Stadium, and were then beaten in Wollongong by the Broncos later in the season. One game, both teams met in Brisbane in the final, where they lost to Broncos 24-10, ending the Dragons season and also Wendell Sailor's career. Ironically, his first (and last) match for the Dragons is against the Broncos.

Some unforgettable matches between Dragons and Broncos have included:

  • Round 11, 2002: Brisbane are at the top of the unbeaten staircase by then until they meet Dragons at the Aussie Stadium on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Dragons won 28-20 to make Brisbane's first defeat of the season, but in the 17th round the Broncos kept them back with a 34-22 victory at ANZ Stadium.
  • Round 26, 2003: The Dragons quit the final fight and the Broncos the previous week lost their current club record with a sixth successive defeat when the two teams gathered at Suncorp Stadium in the last round of the 2003 season. The second Drag-string side, without more than half from a stunned first-class team Broncos 26-25 with prostitute Mark Riddell kicking an impossible penalty goal with more than 90 seconds left. It condemned the Broncos to their seventh consecutive loss and gave hope to Dragons fans for the 2004 season.
  • Act 12, 2004: Even the preliminary experiments from Mark Gasnier (issued from the New South Wales team of Origin teams for disciplinary issues) can inspire the Dragon as they lose by just two points, 24-22.
  • Round 23, 2005: In a potential Grand Final preview, the score was locked at 0-0 for most of the first half before the Dragons broke away in the second half to record a 24-4 win and incite Brisbane at the time - a traditional end-of-season form bad.
  • Round 15, 2006: With Dragons trailing 16-12 with two minutes remaining, Dragons winger Brett Morris scored his first goal in the first corner at the last minute after capturing the Chief Mathew bomb. Trial allowed, leaving the Dragon Aaron Gorrell thrower (in a different irony, he then went on to play for the Broncos) with a side conversion to win the match. Gorrell nailed him and the Dragons won the match 18-16.
  • 2nd Qualifying Final, 2006: The Dragons defeat the Broncos 20-4, the third time Dragons beat Brisbane in that year. The Broncos finally went on to win the prime minister.
  • Round 13, 2008: Wendell Sailor plays his first game for the Dragons against the Broncos, but rests just before halftime after a jaw injury suffered in the first half. The Dragons won 34-16.
  • Round 23, 2008: Sailors marked their comeback to the Suncorp Stadium with their first experiment since returning to the rugby league in victory to the Dragons, 24-20.
  • Round 4, 2009: Wayne Bennett, Darius Boyd, and several others oppose the Broncos for the first time in their lives. Despite conceding early trials for Israel's Folau, the Dragons won 25-12 with Wendell Sailor with a precisely scored game win.
  • 2nd Semifinals, 2009: The Broncos end the Dragons season with a 24-10 victory, and Dragons becomes the first small prime minister in 16 years to be eliminated only in the 2nd round of the Final.
  • 2nd Semifinal, 2011: The Broncos beat the 13-12 Dragons with a goal kicked by Darren Lockyer in extra time, Darren winning the match with the crack cheekbone he received at the end of the match, it also turned into the last Darren Game Lockyer for Broncos and Wayne Bennett (coaching) and Mark Gasnier last for Dragons.
  • Round 1, 2018: In the season opener, Ben Hunt plays his first game for the Dragons after leaving the Broncos the year before, Dragons defeating the Broncos 34-12 with Hunt scoring a cross with a bad pass from the Broncos recruiting Matt Lodge.

Players who played for the Dragons who had won the premiership with Brisbane included Darius Boyd and Luke Priddis, who also won the prime minister with Penrith in 2003. Other players include Nick Emmett who was brought to the club by Wayne Bennett, and Neville Costigan, who was fired just before the success of the Broncos in 2006.

Melbourne Storm

Both teams played in the Grand Final in 1999. It was remembered for a penalty awarded by Dragons winger Jamie Ainscough who harmed Dragons as prime minister. This is the first appearance of NRL Grand Final Dragons as the first Storm Grand Final merger and appearance only in its second year of existence. The Dragons had led 14-0 at half-time just for Melbourne to return and claim a controversial 20-18 victory following a penalty try two minutes from time.

Both teams also have some memories, not to mention controversial matches in the next decade, nothing more than a rematch of the Grand Final in 2000 that saw the Storm destroy the 70-10 Dragons at MCG (this remains St George Illawarra's biggest defeat as a joint venture until the moment this). Ahead of the game, then Dragons, the eighth, Anthony Mundine, claimed that the Storm was not an undeserved prime minister, which sparked the outrage of fans and Storm players, who became the catalyst of the great victory. But The Dragons claimed revenge later that year with a 50-4 victory at WIN Stadium (which also remains the worst of the Storm that ever happened to date).

The 2009 season opens with these two teams facing each other in a much-discussed game. The five-eight dragon Jamie Soward labeled the 'rag doll' in defense while trying to stop the storm Greg Inglis scoring a try, but since Soward's match has matured. The Dragons lost 17-16 in extra time, with Inglis scoring the winning goal in the match. In the return match, Soward also became the center of attention as he used his legs to prevent Inglis from scoring again, resulting in eight test points and Soward inserted in the report (he was reprimanded for this). The Dragons won this match 26-12. In round 4, 2010, Dragons are the last team to lose premiership points to the Storm before their paycheck scandal unfolds.

The rivalry was reignited when Dragons was also involved in a controversial defeat for the Storm at the start of the 2014 season. In their 6th round match at AAMI Park, an arbitration and timekeeping error caused the Storm to score after the siren went, to win the game. In the 80th minute, the Dragons led 24-22. Full-time sirens were heard in the 80th minute, before Storm players overcome. After the tackle is over, the referee is allowed to play to continue, rather than ending the match, which gives Storm the chance to spread the ball in an elongated game, resulting in experiments and conversions in the 81st minute, giving them a win, 28-24.
