Composition
"On Top of the World" features mainly guitar and piano instrumentation, with vocals performed by vocalist Dan Reynolds. Originally published in key C major, the song itself expresses the celebration of achievement for the band after struggling for years to become successful. The song combines the progression of C-F-C-Dm chords in verses, and F-C-G-Dm in chorus and bridge, with pre-chorus using Am and G to create different pauses in the song. The song "On Top of the World" is found as a positive and upbeat song, unlike other songs found on Night Visions, including "Bleeding Out" and "Hear Me".
The song is based on a sample of Steve Reich's minimalist composer Clapping Music from 1972.

Music video
As part of the Imagine Dragons documentary Imagine Dragons: The Making of Night Visions, originally aired on November 7, 2012, the band filmed themselves "On Top of the World" videos and then uploaded to YouTube.
On November 13, 2013 the band released an official music video for the song. The video quiped popular conspiracy theories that the landing in 1969 was falsified, a recording directed by Stanley Kubrick, and that Kubrick then made reference to the forgery in various subsequent films. In the video, rock bands similar to The Beatles (played by Imagine Dragons members) pretend to be astronauts for landing on a fake moon. The recording goes awry because fans of the band flow into the sound stage and turn the show into rock concerts, much to the chagrin of Kubrick and President Richard Nixon, who are also at hand; the crowd might find out by being there, that the landing is fake or just happy to be in concert. People at home may agree now that the conspiracy is real, though only how many people are consciously or unconsciously pointed out. The video also briefly refers to other popular conspiracy theories from around the same time, that Beatles member Paul McCartney died in 1966 and was replaced by a similar one.
The video was filmed in Provo, Utah, the original home of Imagine Dragons, and included the brilliant acting of various celebrities associated with Provo or Brigham Young University, including Jon Heder, Studio TV , guitarist Robbie Connolly , and a member of The New Electric Sound. Whit Hertford plays Kubrick, and singer Aja Volkman, wife of Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds, appears as the wife of Reynolds character.
