The Hedge Knight

Novella first originally published August 25, 1998 in the anthology Legend , edited by Robert Silverberg. The story was later adapted into six editions of comic book series limited by Ben Avery, drawn by Mike S. Miller, produced by Roaring Studios (now Dabel Brothers Productions) and published by Comic Drawings and Devil's Due between August 2003 and May 2004. For publishing the series limited as a graphic novel in June 2004. Following the cessation of partnerships between Dabel Brothers and Devil's Due, this graphic novel has been re-published in various editions.

Plot

After the death of a nomad hedge knight, Ser Arlan of Pennytree, Decke's followers used the armor of Ser Arlan as his own, as well as his equipment, three horses, and the rest of the money, in the hope of becoming a knight in Ashford town, under the name 'Ser Duncan the Tall'. On the way , he got his own bodyguard at a boy who was nicknamed 'Egg'. In Ashford, Dunk sells one of his horses for a suit of armor by Pate's pate, and befriends the guard and cousin Ser Steffon Fossoway, Raymun Fossoway. Without proof of his knighthood, he was almost blocked from competition until Prince Baelor Targaryen guaranteed it. Forbidden to use the Ser Arlan symbol, Dunk commissioned an attractive young dalang named Tanselle to paint a new one. Dunk watched the first day of the competition, with Egg on his shoulders. After some spectacular tilts, Baelor's nephew, Prince Aerion Targaryen, embarrassed him by killing Ser Humfrey Hardyng's horse.

When Dunk retired in the Fossoways tent to drink with Raymun, Egg revealed that Tanselle was beaten by Prince Aerion. Dunk rushes to defend Tanselle and attack Aerion; when the royal guard captures Dunk, Egg reveals that he is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen, Aerion's sister. After meeting Prince Baelor again, Dunk chose the court by battle rather than mutilation for his assault on Aerion, which demands 'Trial of Seven' (where two sides of the seven knights fight on horseback). Steffon and Raymun, and then Aegon, promise to get Duncan's partisans; and another Aerion brother, Prince Daeron, summoned Drunken, warning Dunk that his father would have three knights from the Kingsguard fight in the trial.

Dunk meets again with Pate, who presents it with a new shield, originally the old one reinforced with a new steel by Pate and Tanselle has painted in his chosen sigil - an elm tree that silhouettes against the sunset with a falling star. - and leave it before leaving. On the morning of the trial, Raymun brought Ser Humfrey Hardyng and Ser Humfrey Beesbury to Duncan's side; and Aegon brought Ser Robyn Rhysling and Ser Lyonel Baratheon (called "Laughing Storm"). Steffon sided with the accusers on the merits of a noble; and Raymun begs to be knighted and fight in Steffon's place. Dunk hesitated, because his own knights were dubious, and Lyonel gave Raymun his knights - but Dunk was still a short knight. Finally, Prince Baelor announces that he will become Dunk's champion himself. In the resulting joust, Dunk is unhorsed by Aerion, but knocks him into submission, and Aerion withdraws his charge. The battle spent the second life of Humfreys; and Baelor himself died from a blow to the head. Prince Maekar, Aegon's father, then offers Dunk a position at his home to train Aegon; but Dunk insists on permission to travel, and takes Aegon as a bodyguard, under the former alias 'Egg'. After that Dunk and Egg leave for Dorne.

The Sworn Sword

The second novella was published in 2003 in the Legend II anthology, also edited by Robert Silverberg. The story has been adapted to graphic novel by Ben Avery and drawn by Mike S. Miller, in collaboration with publishers and distributors Marvel Comics. This graphic novel was released on June 18, 2008, with the first comic released on June 20, 2007.

Plot

The story begins in Reach with the Elderly Duncan who was appointed to Ser Eustace Osgrey from Standfast, and illuminated some aspects of the Westeros feudal system. A series of flashbacks narrated by Ser Eustace tells the events of the Blackfyre Rebellion and its conclusions in the Battle of the Redgrass Field.

In Standfast Castle, Dunk and Ser Eustace's other sworn sword, Ser Bennis the Brown, discovered that the dam had been built across the local stream, by farmers serving Lady Rohanne Webber of Coldmoat. Bennis reacted angrily, cutting off the cheek of one of the peasants. Upon hearing the news, Ser Eustace realized that Lady Webber would be angry with Bennis's actions against his servant, and ordered Dunk and Bennis to train charges from three villages. For a peaceful solution, Eustace sends Dunk to Coldmoat, where Dunk finds out that Lady Rohanne stands to lose his land to a male cousin if he does not take the fifth husband on the second anniversary of his father's death. His Castellan, the proud Ser Lucas Inchfield (known as "Long Inch" for 6-inch 7 inches tall), is his most insistent suitor, but he has rejected it. Dunk fails to change Lady's mind on the construction of the dam or seek justice for her servant, and Rohanne informs him that Ser Eustace is a former traitor, who supports the usurper Daemon Blackfyre, and has therefore lost most of his land; when he had fallen in love with his youngest son, who died at Redgrass Field.

Surprised by Ser Eustace treachery news in the past, Dunk returned to Standfast to leave the old knight's service. That night, the Ser Eustace forest was on fire, and Duncan remember Lady Rohanne's threats of "fire and sword" to destroy Standfast. That's why he spread the charges, and promised to fight Lady Rohanne himself. On the river, Dunk climbs into battlefield to pair with Lady Rohanne where the sound of water will prevent anyone in any of the banks from hearing them. Before he entered the river, Ser Eustace pointed out that Dunk had to kill Lady Rohanne at this meeting. Instead, Dunk offers her own blood to Lady Rohanne by cutting her cheek. It pays the debt for the injured peasants; and for the claim that Lady Rohanne had burned the forest, she demanded an apology or justification, and all agreed upon the trial by the battle between Dunk and Ser Lucas, which had to be fought in the river as the only neutral place. In the fight, Dunk was almost calculated by Ser Lucas, but drowned him and almost drowned himself, but was saddled by Maester Lady Rohanne. When he awoke, Dunk learned that Ser Eustace and Lady Rohanne were now married, to reconcile their debt. Before Dunk left, Rohanne offered him his best horse to make a mistake; and when she refused, Lady Rohanne insisted that she take something to remember her, and she pulled her into a passionate kiss, and took a piece of her hair as a memento. After that he and Egg go up to the Wall.

The Mystery Knight

The third novel was published in 2010 in the anthology of Warriors, edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois.

Like The Sworn Sword , this book runs during the reign of Aerys I and after Blackfyre Rebellion is examined in more detail.

Plot

The story begins with Dunk and Egg leaving Stoney Sept, to request service with Lord Beron Stark against Greyjoy's raid on the north coast. On the way they face septon being beheaded for preaching; and then a group of knights and small nobles traveled to the tournament honoring Lord Butterwell's wedding from Whitewalls to Frey of the Crossing, where the prize winner was a dragon egg. Dunk does not like Gorman Peake, whom he believes to be the killer of his former mentor bodyguard. Eggs say Dunk that Peake's arm from three palaces in the orange field is because the Peake family owns three palaces, but loses two to Crown when Peake sides with Blackfyre. During the trip Dunk befriends three other traveling knights: Ser Maynard Plumm, Ser Kyle Cat of Misty Moor, and Ser Glendon Ball who claim to be the illegitimate son of the Knight Quentyn "Fireball" Ball, who fights for Daemon Blackfyre.

The marriage was arranged in Whitewalls and Lord Frey arrived with a four-year-old heir, Walder Frey, and his fifteen-year-old daughter, who married Lord Butterwell. Eggs became increasingly suspicious when he saw that most of the rivals belonged to the rebels. During the wedding Dunk was prepared by John the Fiddler to bring the bride to the bedroom. Dunk did it and then heard from John that the last ever saw Duncan himself, in a dream, in the armor of the royal guards. Dunk enters the first game of joust with the name 'Gallows Knight' (for a new shield obtained after his loss); but was defeated in the first slope by Ser Uthor Underleaf, known as the Snail Knight for his sigil. Duncan then gives Underleaf armor and horses as forfeit, and Underleaf informs Dunk that someone bribed him to kill Dunk on the final slope. Before jousting continued, the news spread through the castle that dragon eggs disappeared, and mistakes were placed on the Ser Glendon Ball, which was imprisoned by Peake. In the search for a missing Egg, Duncan is wounded by Alyn Cockshaw, who claims to have bribed Uthor Underleaf, and threw it into the well. Maynard Plumm comes to Duncan's help, and it is known that Plumm is one of many Bloodraven spies (or perhaps Bloodraven himself), and that John the Fiddler is the eponymous son of Daemon Blackfyre. Dunk finds Egg in sept with the cowering Lord Butterwell, who at the time discovers the true identity of the frightened Egg for his life. Lord Butterwell's son-in-law, Black Tom Heddle tried to kill Egg to incite war, and was killed by Duncan, who later told Egg to flee with Butterwell. To buy time to escape Tele Dunk faces the younger Daemon Blackfyre, and accuses Gorman Peake of faking the ball with the theft of a dragon egg.

Daemon allows Ball to prove his innocence in the trial by battle, in which Ser Glendon strongly defeats Daemon. At this time a large army under King's Hand Brynden Rivers surrounded the Whitewalls, and Daemon was captured. Dunk and Egg meet Bloodraven, and Egg demands Bloodraven for Glendon, Duncan, and other hedgehog prizes. Because he surrendered to Bloodraven without a fight, Lord Butterwell saved his life and left a tenth of his fortune; but his fortress lost the Iron Stage and was torn down. Bloodraven, at Egg's request, gave Dunk gold to make up for his armor. When Dunk asks Bloodraven what the dragon eggs are, Bloodraven says Dunk was taken by his agent (implied being one of the dwarves performing at the wedding).

Packages planned

Martin said that he wanted to write a number of these stories (varying from six to twelve from interview to interview) covering the lives of these two characters.

In 2011 he talked about working on a fourth novel, which was originally incorporated into the anthology (Dangerous Woman), and a year later and three previously published Dunk and Egg stories had to be collected and published in the US by Bantam Spectra as a novel fix-up stand-alone. The working title of the fourth novel is The She-Wolves of Winterfell . By the end of 2013, the story has been postponed while Martin completed The Winds of Winter . In April 2014, Martin also announced that he had underwritten another Dunk and Egg story with the working title of The Village Hero to be installed at Riverlands. He noted that he was not sure which of them would be solved first. In 2015, Martin noted that in addition to She-Wolves and The Village Hero he has quite specific notes and ideas for a number of further installments, including The Sellsword , The Champion , The Kingsguard , and Lord Commander , took the total of the planned series of 9 novellas.
