Gameplay

The Legend of Dragoon has a turn-based game style with a mechanism called "Additions". When the "attack" option is selected from the battle menu, two blue boxes will appear on the screen, one in the middle and one on the outer edge. The outer rectangle will start to shrink and when it overlaps a square inside, the player needs to press the designated button and it will allow the player to continue the addition and do more damage. Characters will receive several extras during the game, which have longer chains and handle more damage. The longer additions, however, allow the enemy a chance to fight and when they do the player needs to press a different button at the right time to prevent and continue their attack. Players must complete each previous addition to level five to unlock the last additional key for each character.

Plot

The story begins when Dart, the protagonist, is heading home from a long five-year journey to chase the black monster, who kills his parents and destroys his hometown, Neet. On the way, he was attacked by Feyrbrand, a dragon like a grasshopper controlled by Sandora, a rebel faction in the Serdia civil war. Dart is saved by a mysterious heroine named Rose, though they soon part ways. When he arrives at his hometown, Seles, he discovers that he has been destroyed by Sandora, and that Shana, Dart's childhood friend (and later in the game, his love interest), has been taken. Dart set out to save him. Throughout the game, he periodically joins the people he helps along the way.

After rescuing Shana from Hellena prison, King Albert sends the party to defend the fortress of Hoax city against the attack from Sandora. Among the attacking Sandora is Kongol, the last survivor of a giant race known as Gigantos. In his battle with Kongol, the first Dart gained his ability to transform into a Dragoon using the Dragoon Spirit of the Red-Eyed Dragon. Kongol is injured, but persisted and retreated. With a safe fortress, they travel to Lohan Town. In town, they meet a man named Lloyd, who is said to be the greatest swordsman in the world. Then they discover that he kidnaps King Albert and takes the Moon Gem away from him, an ancient artifact held by the Royal Family. The king is saved, but Lloyd escapes with the Moon Gem.

They soon discover that Lloyd is collecting other artefacts held by the human monarch since the days of the Wingly Kingdom, and at the same time, causing a catastrophe on the land he visited. While the party tries to reverse Lloyd's work, Lloyd manages to get all three artifacts, and also succeeds in getting the Dragoon Spirit of the Divine Dragon, the world's strongest dragon. Dart and the party finally defeated Lloyd, who then agreed to take them to Emperor Diaz, the ancient Gloriano Emperor during the Dragon Campaign. Emperor Diaz revealed some things to the party.

During the peak of the Wingly Empire over eleven thousand years ago, a creature called Virage Embryo, also known as the God of Destruction, came to the world to end all other lives. Before being born, Winglies used their magical powers to separate his body from his soul, making him unable to destroy it. They then throw the body into the sky, where it becomes the Moon Never Assigns, and seal it using some magical Sign, one in each ancient Wingly city, to prevent the soul and body from reuniting. The God of Destruction was originally placed inside the Crystal Sphere, used by the ancient Wingly ruler Melbu Frahma to increase his power. However, during the Dragons Campaign, when the Dragoons attacked Kadessa, the capital of the Ancient Winglies, the Crystal Sphere was destroyed during a fight between Melbu Frahma and Zieg Feld, the leader of the Dragoons.

Since that time, the soul of the God of Destruction has wandered the Earth and, every hundred and eight years, has the body of a human child in an attempt to return to his body. The body can be summoned if the Signets are destroyed, which can be done using the enormous magical powers contained in the artifacts collected by Lloyd, called the Divine Moon Object. At this moment, the man who is the soul of the God of Destruction is Shana. Emperor Diaz later revealed himself as Zieg Feld, Dart's father and leader Dragoons who fought along with Rose in the Dragon Campaign. After Zieg defeated Melbu Frahma, Melbu threw a spell that petrified him and made the Melbu spirit stay alive in Zieg's body. Eventually, it was revealed that Rose was a Black Monster that destroyed the village of Dart, in an attempt to kill the man who carried the soul of God of Destruction.

After all this is revealed, Zieg (or, more precisely, Melbu Frahma, who now has Zieg's body) takes Shana away and proceeds to destroy the remaining three Spheres that seal the Moon that Never Set, the God of Destruction Devices, causes it to fall from the sky and land on The Divine Tree. He then takes him to the body of the God of Destruction, so that the body will feel the presence of his soul and prepare to recover himself. In contrast, Melbu Frahma united with his own body, taking the form and power of the God of Destruction. Zieg was released from possession of Melbu Frahma, and assisted the party in their efforts to defeat Melbu. The party defeated him, but at the expense of Rose and Zieg who sacrificed themselves to destroy Melbu Frahma. Everyone can go back home to live their own lives.

Development

The Legend of Dragoon was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan (SCEI). The project started in 1996 with a small group of people while the company simultaneously built a team to develop other games such as Ape Escape and Ico . At its peak, the development team consisted of over 100 members, with ten people dedicated solely to drawing the concept of game art. Because this game contains a large number of pre-rendered maps and full motion videos, content is spread across four discs. The Legend of Dragoon took three and a half years to develop before its release in Japan in December 1999. Prior to the June 2000 release in North America, gameplay was rebalanced following the Japanese version of the difficulty complaint. According to Shuhei Yoshida, The Legend of Dragoon weighed on Sony Computer Entertainment $ 16 million to be developed over a period of more than three years and most of the game's sales are made overseas, saying "US sales are very strong."

On December 22, 2010, Sony released the The Legend of Dragoon on PlayStation Network. The North American version was released on May 1, 2012. The title is PSOne Classic bestseller for three months, remaining in the top 5 for five months.

Reception

The Legend of Dragoon received mixed and positive reviews. The game is praised by IGN for its graphics and cinematics. However, the combo system is criticized for requiring too much precision, whereas the titular element of the Dragoon transformation is considered unimportant for gameplay. Game battles are considered repetitive because of the excessive frequency of random encounters. GameSpot Peter Bartholow is more critical of the game. Bartholow called it "a very generic RPG" and stated that the game "borrowed too much from other games and did not have a 'link' to make it worth dealing with excessive defense."

The Legend of Dragoon sold 960,000 copies in North America and more than 280,000 copies in Japan on December 27, 2007. In 2009, GamesRadar put it among games "with untapped potential franchises," commenting: A large and epic RPG designed to compete with the Final Fantasy series ago-juggernaut, Dragoon really succeeds in its task. It's just as beautiful, almost as deep, touching the story, and is completely fixed on FF in some way (avoided random battles, for example). (...) [G] revives the cult Legend of Dragoon status between the PlayStation loyalists today, we're surprised that Sony has let this series fade into obscurity. "
