Design and development

The Dragonfly is a two-seat plane that features a tandem wing layout with the front wing mounted low and the other behind the cockpit in shoulder position, a two-seat-side-by-side cockpit configuration under a bubble canopy, fixed landing gear and single engine in tractor configuration. The cockpit has a width of 43Ã, (109 cm)

The aircraft is constructed of composites, based on a construction technique pioneered by Burt Rutan at Rutan Aircraft Factory (RAF). The airframe design is visually similar to Quickie 2 RAF, independently developed, but Dragonfly has a larger airfoil and smaller engine, resulting in a slower but more benign aircraft. Its forward 20Ã, ft (6.1Ã, m) wing span employs an airfoil GU25-5 (11) 8 mod, when the rear wing (span 22Ã, ft) uses Airfoil Eppler 1212. Both wings have a total area of 92.2 sq ft (8 , 57 m 2 ). The standard machines used include 60Ã, hp (45Ã, kW) air-cooled engines Volkswagen and 85Ã, hp (63Ã, kW) Jabiru 2200 four-stroke powerplants. The construction time of the provided kit is estimated to be 700 hours, while the plan is estimated to be over 1200 hours.

Operational history

Dragonflies were given the New Extraordinary Design Award at the EAA Convention in 1980. In 1998, 500 examples of all variants were reported to fly.

Variant

Dragonfly Mk I
The original version with the main landing gear was installed in the fairing at the bottom end of the wing. Operation requires a wide asphalt runway and taxiway due to the very wide main wheels.
Dragonfly Mk II
Version with conventional landing gear.
Dragonfly Mk III
Version with three-wheeled landing gear.
