Wu Xing Cycle

In the regenerative cycle of Wu Xing, water produces Wood, "because rain or dew causes crop life to flourish"; Wood gives birth to fire as "fire is produced by rubbing two pieces of wood" and it must be driven by wood burning.

In the cycle of conquest:

Wood overcomes the earth by tying it with the roots of trees and pulling food from the ground;

Metal overcomes Wood, because metal axes can topple the largest trees.
