Not to be confused with the related Dracaena cinnabari , the original dragon blood tree from Socotra (an island in the Arabian Sea, part of Yemen).

Dracaena draco , Canary Islands dragon tree or drago , is a plant like a subtropical tree in the genus Dracaena , a native of the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira, and locally in western Morocco, and introduced to the Azores. It is a natural symbol of the island of Tenerife, along with the blue chaffinch.

Description

Dracaena draco is a monocot with a growing habit like a tree that is currently placed in the family of asparagus (Asparagaceae, subfamily Nolinoidae). When young it has a single trunk. In about 10-15 years, these stems stop growing and produce the first flowers with white flowers, flower-like lilies, followed by coral terry. Immediately a terminal shoot crown appeared and the plant began to branch off. Each branch grows for about 10-15 years and re-branches, so the adult plants have a habit like umbrella. It grows slowly, takes about ten years to reach 1.2 meters (4 feet) but can grow faster.

Being a monocotyledon, it does not feature an annual ring or growth so that the tree age can only be estimated by the number of branching points before it reaches the canopy. The specimen called "El Drago Milenario" (a thousand-year-old dragon) growing on Icod de los Vinos in northwest Tenerife is the oldest living plant of this species. His age was estimated in 1975 to be about 250 years old, with a maximum of 365 years, not several thousand as he had previously claimed. It was also the largest of the draft tree drafts. Its large trunk comes from the contribution of the airborne group that emerges from the lowest branches and grows to the ground. Down along the tree trunk, they cling tightly to the tree trunk, integrate with it and contribute to its radial growth. There is considerable genetic variation in Canary Island dragon trees. The forms found in Gran Canaria are now treated as separate species, Dracaena tamaranae, based on differences in flower structures. The endemic form for La Palma was initially very low branching with many nearly vertical branches set quickly. There is a forest of trees like that in Las Tricias, Garafia district, La Palma.

Usage

When the bark or leaves are cut they emit a reddish resin, one of several sources of substances known as dragon blood. The red resin of this tree contains many mono flavans and dimers that contribute to the red color of the resin. Dragon blood has a number of traditional medical uses, although dragon blood obtained from Dracaena draco was not known until the fifteenth century, and analysis shows that most of the dragon's blood used in art is obtained from the genus species Daemonorops . The body of primary and secondary plants is the place of the secretory plant tissue that forms the dragon's blood. These tissues include soil parenchyma cells and cortical cells. The dragon blood from Dracaena draco and Dracaena cinnabari can be distinguished by the difference in the 10 compounds and the dominant flavonoid DrC11 lost in Dracaena draco.

Guanches worshiped a specimen in Tenerife, and emptied his trunk into a small shelter. Humboldt saw it during his visit. It is 70 feet (21 m) tall and 45 feet (14 m) in circumference, and is estimated to be 6,000 years old. It was destroyed by a storm in 1868.
