Legend

Wawel Dragon is a famous dragon in Polish mythology living in a cave at the foot of Wawel Hill on the banks of the Vistula River. One of the many popular stories about dragons took place in Kraków during the reign of King Krakus, the founder of the city myth. In the legend, the dragon frightened the local villagers by destroying their homes and eating their daughters. Desperate to solve the problem, King Krakus promises his daughter Wanda's hand to every brave man who can defeat a dragon. A cobbler named Skuba takes the challenge and puts a lamb with sulfur for the dragon to eat. Skuba leaves the sheep near the dragon cave and the unwary animal takes the bait. Soon after, the dragon's thirst grew unbearably and he drank so much water from the Vistula River that he exploded from an inaccessible volume. King Krakus later married his daughter, Wanda, to the victorious Scuba. In the oldest version, the 12th century of this story, written by Wincenty Kad? Ubek. dragons were defeated by two sons of Krak King, Krakus II and Lech II.

Statue

The sculpture was designed by the Polish sculptor Bronis? Aw Chromy and finished in 1969; it was installed in its present location in 1972, the date usually repeated in other sources; Bielowicz notes that the statue was made in 1969 but was not unveiled at its current location until 1972. The statue is made of bronze and stands on a large limestone rock. Height 6 meters (20 feet).

Some early designs for sculpture include a more traditional fountain. The variant then proposes that it should be partially submerged in the nearby Vistula river, but this is rejected. In the end, the statue was designed to breathe fire; It has also been modernized recently so that the breath of fire can be triggered by an SMS text message (the statue can do so at intervals of at least 15 seconds). This service is popular, and has received at least 2,500 requests in one day. Fire uses natural gas as fuel. Without any text message, the breath of fire takes about five minutes.

This statue has been described as a "traditional" element of the modern KrakÃÆ'³w landscape, and as the city's main tourist attraction, especially for children.
