The Griffon Bruxellois or Brussels Griffon is a toy type dog, named for their hometown of Brussels, Belgium. The Griffon Bruxellois can refer to three different races, Griffon Bruxellois , Griffon Belge and Petit BrabanÃÆ'§on . Identical in standard except for coats and color differences, in some standards they are considered varieties of the same kind, such as Belgian Shepherd Dog.

History

Three variations of this dog, Brussels Griffon (Griffon Bruxellois), Griffon Belgium (Griffon Belge), and Petit BrabanÃÆ'§on, all descended from an old breed called the Smousje, coarse, small terrier kept in a cage to remove rodents, similar to the Dutch Smoushond. The small wire-haired dog in the foreground of Jan van Eyck's painting Arnolfini's wedding is considered the earliest form of this breed. In Belgium, coaches liked their little vigilant Griffons d'Ecurie (horse-coated dogs) and in the 19th century, they kept their Griffons with imported toy dogs. Breeding with Pug and King Charles Spaniel carrying the breed type today, but also carrying a short black coat that leads to Petits BrabanÃÆ'§on , which was originally a mistake on the offspring. Spaniels also carry the rich red and black and brown colors of Griffon Bruxellois and the modern Griffon Belge.

The Griffon Bruxellois grew in popularity in the late 19th century with workers and nobles in Belgium. The first Bruxellois Griffon was registered in 1883 in the volume volume of the first volume club kennel, Livre des Origines Saint-Hubert (LOSH). The popularity of the breed increased with the interest of Queen Marie Henriette, a dog enthusiast who visited the annual Belgian dog show religiously, often with her daughter, and became a breeder and amplifier of Griffon Bruxellois, giving them international fame and popularity. Many dogs are exported to other countries, leading to Griffon Bruxellois club in England (1897) and Brussels Griffon club in the US (1945).

The First World War and the Second World War proved to be a disastrous time for breeds. War time is difficult on every dog type, and recovery figures after the First World War are reinforced by increased vigilance in breeding away from errors such as webbed fingers. At the end of the Second World War, Belgium barely had the remaining Griffon Bruxellois inhabitants, and it was only through the vigilance of dedicated breeders (especially in the US) that the breeds survived.

These breeds were never many or popular, but had a brief fashion in the late 1950s, and now generally common breed. Recently there has been an increase in interest in the United States due to Griffon's appearances in the film, As Good As It Gets, and also because of increased interest in dog toys.

Description

The Brussels Griffon is usually a small breed with a sturdy frame. The average adult Griffon stands from 9 to 11 inches (230-280 mm) tall, and weighs 8 to 10 pounds (4-5 kg). They have domed heads, short noses, and underbites. Their human-like features are often likened to Ewok.

The Griffon comes in two coat variants, rough/coarse and smooth. Their hair (not feathers) can be red, black and brown, or black and reddish in color. Short hair Griffon takes a little care while a rough/coarse coat of Griffon requires weekly care attention.

Temperament

The Griffon Bruxellois is known to have a big heart, and a strong desire to curl up and be with his master. They display a visible air of self-interest. Griffons should not be shy or aggressive, but they are very emotionally sensitive, and should therefore be carefully socialized at a young age. Griffons must also be vigilant, curious and interested in the environment.

Griffons tend to be tied to one human being more than the other. In fact, Griffons are very good with kids as long as they are not teased. They are not very patient but love to play. Griffons tend to get along well with other animals in the home, including cats, weasels, and other dogs. However, they can get into trouble because they have no concept of their own relative size and can try to dominate dogs much larger than themselves.

Health

Griffons have relatively few inherited health problems, but still to be tested for congenital defects, the most serious are Syringomyelia (SM) and Chiari-like malformation (CM). Griffon's typical lifetime is somewhere in the range of 10 to 15 years.

Birthing

Griffons usually have no problems when bedwetting alone, but sometimes complications may require a cesarean section. Litter size is usually 1-3 puppies. Litter size often determines the extent of these complications. Litter six is not outrageous. When they are born, the puppies weigh only a few ounces (about 100 grams) and are small enough to fit in the palm of an adult's hand. They can get leg and heart problems from an early age.

Cleft palate

One of the problems that is usually fatal for puppies is to have a ceiling. This results in the puppy not receiving food from the mother and finally starving. This is not uncommon but, depending on the size of the gap, it is possible for the puppy to survive while it becomes an older operation can be done to close the hole.

Eyes

Most have large eyes that may require re-examination of the veterinarian.

  • Laseration - Laseration is a common problem among these types. Because the Griffons have large eyes and short snouts, there is very little to protect their eyesight from foreign objects. If laceration is not treated it can cause blindness.
  • Cataracts - Like most breeds, cataracts are a common problem as dogs age. For many breeders, it is a disappointment that cataracts usually develop long after the dog is raised.
  • Lens Luxations - Lens luxations can be quite common in breeds and produce secondary glaucoma
  • Glaucoma - Glaucoma can also be a common problem among the Griffons because of the facial features and the size of the eyes that breed.

Heat Stroke

Although Griffons have a shortened snout, heat stroke is not a major problem for them as is the case with other flat-faced breeds. The muzzle shortened to this breed can cause breathing problems in extreme heat, but overall they tolerate both hot and cold weather well. As with any type, owners should use common sense and not let them outdoors without protection of the elements or subject them to strict practice during extreme temperatures, so leave them in your home for cool air and a little water.

Syringomyelia

Syringomyelia (SM) is a condition that affects the brain and the spine, causing symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to severe pain and partial paralysis. Syringomyelia is characterized by a fluid containing the cavities in the spinal cord. SM occurs secondary to cerebrospinal fluid obstruction (CSF) especially if the obstruction is present in the foramen magnum. Until now the condition has been reported in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, King Charles Spaniels, Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese Terriers, Chihuahua, Miniature Dachshunds, Miniature/Toy Poodle, Bichon Frisà ©, Pugs, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs, Pekingese, Miniature Pinscher, mixbreeds, and some cats.

Not all dogs with BC have clinical signs. The presence of signs correlates with the width of the syrinx and the extent of spinal dorsal spine damage. Syrinx can progressively progress and asymptomatic dogs early in life may experience pain.
