Jade Dragon ( Dei Guan ) is a fictitious, mutant character that appears in an American comic book published by Marvel Comics.

Jade Dragon was created by Bill Mantlo and Jim Lee and his first appearance was at Alpha Flight . 1 # 59 (June 1988).

The characters then appear on Alpha Flight <# 60-62 (July-September 1988), # 64-66 (November 1988 to January 1989), and X-Force Annual # 3 (1988).

Jade Dragon received an entry in the Official Handbook from Marvel Universe Updates '89 # 4.

Fictional character biography

Dei Guan is an orphan, an only child of a parent who is branded as an intellectual and executed during the turbulent Cultural Revolution in China. Dei Guan was placed in a "re-education camp." There he stifled a vigorous propaganda between the long forced labor in the iron mine.

It was during one of the shifts in the iron mine that mysterious Geomancer appeared and told Dei Guan that their ancestors believed that the "jade dragon" lived under the earth and lent their strength to the great warriors. He was then given to Dei Guan Jade Dragon power. Using this new power, Dei Guan transforms himself into a dragon and escapes from a mine. Despite his suffering, Dei Guan continues to consider himself a Chinese patriot. Therefore, he did not try to escape or defect. Shortly after escaping from the mine, the famous Gang of Four who had ruled China after Mao Zedong's death was arrested. Behind a new political era; Dei Guan offers his services to the state by enlisting in the army.

The first battle of Jade Dragon took place in the remote Danwei province bordering the Soviet Union. Dei Guan was part of a unified army that was ordered to ride a mountain shrine occupied, according to the government, by the rebel monks. The army was prevented from going forward by the impenetrable force shield generated by the minds of the monks. Unable to penetrate or destroy it with a conventional weapon, the commander of the army ordered Dei Guan to turn into a Jade Dragon to destroy the shield and kill the monks. Jade Dragon destroys the protective force with a blow from his tail, then burns the monks with his fiery breath. Despite his precision in carrying out his commander's orders, Jade Dragon regretted his actions because he believed the monks posed no threat to the government. The commander then ordered Jade Dragon to fly forward to the temple and subdue any resistance. Dragon Jade enters the temple where he defeats the adventurer, Puck, and kills the Old High. With the death of the Old High, Dei Guan's conscience finally rebelled. So when his commander ordered him to kill the remaining monk, not only rejected the Jade Dragon, he tried to drive all the soldiers out of the temple.

Jade Dragon was prevented from quickly completing this with the interference of the spirit of the Old High. To help Puck, who suffers from spiritual trauma, Lama Lama offers to help Puck in his path of enlightenment by opening a portal to whatever dimension he chooses. Unknowingly, Puck looks for his friends and former teammate, a member of an adventurous team called Alpha Flight. He is surprised to find them in a live and dead battle against a demon called Dreamqueen in another dimensional realm of Liveworld. Alpha Flights fought against Dreamqueen, who attempted to conquer the Earth, spilled into the temple courtyard through the portal Lama Tinggi was created. Jade Dragon helps Alpha Flight against Dreamqueen and his accomplices and helps stop him crossing the portal.

Once the portal is closed; the spirit of Old High loads Alpha Flight and Jade Dragon to Canada where Dei Guan witnesses in the Canadian government's investigation of Alpha Flight. As a result of the examination, Alpha Flight broke away from its government connection.

Soon after, the Canadian intelligence service arrested Dei Guan. Under interrogation he revealed that he still considered himself a Chinese patriot and that he had no intention of defecting. But the Chinese government, believing that he had become a defector, sent an agent team known as Chinese Army to find him, gave him the last chance to return to China, and if he refused, to kill him.

But the Chinese Force involuntarily fell under the control of Dreamqueen, who finally made it to Earth. After anesthetize and defeating Jade Dragon, the Chinese Army flew it to Edmonton, Alberta, where Dreamqueen is located. Dreamqueen's goal in using China Force is twofold. The first is to use it to capture Jade Dragon and Alpha Flight and make them a helpless prisoner for him to kill. The second is to help him in his grappling with Talisman's circle of power which will then be used by Dreamqueen to seize the absolute control of the Earth.

In the end, Dreamqueen's plan to use China Force failed. Alpha Flight defeated China Force, and Laura Dean used her super powers to open the portal to China. Alpha flight throws a confused member of the Chinese Army through the portal. Dragon follows his team back to China, determined to prove to his government that he is not a traitor.

Jade Dragon later became a member of China's 3-Peasant super-human adversary group, which sought to free Chinese domestic servants through an alliance with the Mutant Liberation Front.
