Personal life

Cressida Cowell was born on April 15, 1966 in London. He is the daughter of Michael Hare, Viscount Blakenham 2nd. His uncle, with marriage, was the US judge, Stephen Breyer.

As a child, Cowell stated that he "grew up in London and on an uninhabited small island off the west coast of Scotland," and that it was during the summer spent at Inner Hebrides where he first began developing his writing and drawing talents:

"I spent a lot of time as a child on an uninhabited small island off the west coast of Scotland... By the time I was eight years old, my family had built a small stone house on the island, and with boat, we can lure enough food to feed the family during the summer.

"Since then, every year we spend four summer weeks and two spring weeks on the island. The house is illuminated by candlelight, and there is no phone or television, so I spend a lot of time drawing and writing stories."

Cowell attended Keble College, Oxford where he studied English, and he also studied at the Saint Martin School of Art and the University of Brighton where he studied illustrations.

Cressida Cowell currently lives in London with her husband Simon, former director and interim CEO of Save the Children International Alliance; Maisie and Clementine daughters; and Alexander's son.
