Dark Fire is the fifth book in The Last Dragon Chronicles by Chris d'Lacey. It was released on July 2, 2009 in the UK and published on May 1, 2010 for the US.

Three young adults named Arthur, Lucy and Elizabeth traveled to meet Rupert Steiner. Gadzooks meets them and leaves them a note. Scuffenbury is written in Dragontounge. This is the name for the cart that has a legend, contains a dragon. Back in their hometown, Wayward Crescent, David asks Zanna, David's boyfriend, for more information on Gwilanna. This is where Gwillanna threatens to hand over the Dark Fire Tear to IX. She had a choice to sacrifice her husband while being threatened, but Zanna used to replace David. Calling the dragon Ghislaine, Gwilanna called darkling. David and Zanna go home one night and find their neighbor, Henry Bacon, in the hospital for a stroke. Liz and Lucy are in the hospital and David gets a letter. He learned about Scuffenbury. David went with Liz to visit Henry at the hospital, and Henry died during their visit. After Henry died, Gwilanna, attends the funeral and warns David that he will do anything to get his hands on obsidian and Dark Fire. The group meets with Henry's sister, Agatha, a strong brother. They also discovered that Henry had left Liz and Lucy $ 50,000, and left David a collection of Arctic memorabilia and Zanna's house. The will also says that the Arctic will be left in its place. After this, Agatha (an Sybil) teaches Zanna healing magicks and shows that she is at peace with David.

Zanna goes into town with Alexa and Gretel to open her shop, but on the way the group is attacked by a semi-Darkling herd and rescued by Tam, who destroys them with Kailar's spirit. Zanna is injured, but uses her new healing knowledge to correct the wound. Tam spoke to David about Rupert Steiner, who had come to him with a story about the translation of the dragontongue found on the Glacier expedition. Lucy tells David that Sophie emails him, tries to talk to him, and David leaves for Africa. Lucy then receives a phone call from an old friend, Melanie Cartwright, who has seen a video of a Pennykettle dragon who moves on TV and is worried about her "special dragon", Glade. David got to Africa and found Sophie's wildlife refuge on fire. Grockle extinguished the fire. Sophie is killed and Grace prepares to cry on the Tears of Fire. Semi-Darkling who started the fire is still alive. He plans to turn Grace's tears to create a dark fire. Pieter, Sophie's fiancee, tried to kill her, but instead killed her. David then distracts Darkling with the dark fire he already has, catches it and sends it back to the IX with a warning to leave the Pennykettle dragon alone. Mutu, one of Sophie's roommates, told David that she saw a woman dancing in a blaze. David then left Africa, taking with him Grace's stone body. Her Fire Tears were captured by Groyne during the fight.

When he comes home. David tells Zanna that Alexa is a new species. He is an angel, a bridge between a dragon and a human and when the dragons are revealed, people everywhere will want to be like him. He also tells him that people will travel to Ki: mera. This is the Fain home world.

In Den Dragon, David collects dragons in an attempt to change the dark fire and return it to Gwillan. Gollygosh will extract a dark fire from the obsidian, Groyne will mix it with Fire Flame Water and some ice flames to neutralize it, and G'reth will hope that Gwillan and Grace can be revived. However, while David explains what will happen, Gollygosh is momentarily damaged by a dark fire, and releases him early. The Dark Fire then enters Liz and her baby and she is knocked out. While Zanna tends to her, He then sends Lucy with Tam to Scuffenbury. Unaware that, in the Dragon Den, Gwillan dries Grace into himself. Lucy and Tam travel to Scuffenbury. On the way, Lucy read an article about the last dragon encounter. This is how eleven of the last twelve dragons spilled half their tears of fire, then entered the stasis, while the twelfth, Gawaine, swallowed all eleven tears and planned to use them to defeat Ix. Lucy and Tam arrive at their guesthouse, run by Hannah and Clive, and have one more guest, Ny. Gee. They boarded Glissington Tor, the cemetery of the dragon, that night, and that night Lucy had a nightmare about a cat, whom she had met earlier that day, carrying her semi-dark.

At Crescent, Liz is a coma, but not hurt. When Gwillan suddenly wakes up, Melanie Cartwright comes to visit her mother, Rachel, and dragon, Glade, who can sense the mood. Gretel puts people to sleep so they do not get in the way, and Glade goes upstairs to try and check Liz and her baby. She finds that Liz is fine, but the baby's body is in stasis, and her auma has been moved to Gwillan. The Cartwrights leave, and David contacts G'Oreal, informing him that Grockle destroys the semi-Darklings. The next morning, Tam and Lucy climb Scuffenbury Hill to see the unicorn. While they were there, the pyramidal stones, remnants of the monument at Glissington Tor, began to rise from the earth and rebuild the tombstones, revealing more carvings of limestone - the horn of a unicorn. Mrs. Gee, a brother, has rebuilt the rough pyramids to try and awaken the unicorns and dragons, but Hannah, who claims to know all the secrets of Tor, warns him that this legend is wrong, and wakes the dragon in need of a redheaded girl, touched by a dragon spirit. He also explains that the dragon in stasis is Gawaine, who comes to Scuffenbury looking for unicorn Terraelle healing to help him give birth, and offers to help Ny Gee claim the dragon in return for one of his scales.

Gwendolen, who was left at the hotel to watch the mysterious cat, was surprised to learn that the cat was not only real, he could do magic, and communicate. It tells her that it's really a girl named Bella, who turns into a cat by Ny. Gee. TV news shows dragon images released around the world, and Hannah tells Lucy that she can wake the dragon if she touches her and sings - and that there's a tunnel under the pyramid that will let Lucy touch the dragon.

At Crescent Wayward, Zanna was confused by the e-mail that Lucy received, which David said she was from other Guinevere daughters. He also gave Tam's article to him, telling him that Gawaine, the dragon at Scuffenbury and who was chosen to fight IX, was Gawain's mother, and his plan to destroy IX was to pull IX on him, then sacrifice himself in hell. Permanently, the plans have been adopted by the new Wearle. Tam and Lucy walked through the tunnel to wake Gawaine, but when the dragon moved, Hannah betrayed them. Tam trapped underground, and Lucy was arrested by Mrs. Gee, but Bella helped her escape. In the turmoil of the dragon resurrection, Ny Gee, Hannah and Clive were all killed and the hotel collapsed. Meanwhile, Melanie and Rachel Cartwright were attacked by the last surviving semi-Darkling, who wounded both before taking Glade. Glade sent a distress signal to Pennykettles, which was intercepted by Gwillan.

Lucy calls David for help, and she sends Grockle. With her help, Lucy puts some tears in Glissington cairn, though Bella tries to stop her. Tears reflected the moonlight onto the unicorn's horn, made it alive, and it freed Gawaine. However, when Zanna finds via email Bella sends Lucy, Gawaine is betrayed and one of her sons is killed by a brother posing as a redhead girl, and when she sees Lucy, she attacks. Grockle fails to keep Lucy, but, since Lucy is Gawaine's family, the flame does not harm her, and Gawine is distracted long enough that David can come to help.

Meanwhile, the last remaining semi-Darkling swallowed Lucy's auma out of the tears he left at Glissington Cairn. It uses the power in tears to renew itself, and calls Ix in that direction, and Darkling is full of birth, with the ability to self-replicate, which he does until there are four Darklings. Realizing the danger, David gave Lucy a narwhal dimpled talisman that he thought was Groyne so he could be taken home, unaware that the ivory was actually Gwillan, who had taken Groyne's abilities, and Lucy had just moved across the valley.

Gawaine and G'lant - the combined power of David and Grockle - begin against Darklings. Someone attacked Gawaine's mind before he destroyed it, but G'lant returned it before a permanent injury could occur. One then distracts G'lant while the remaining two attack Gawaine. One crushed his wings and poisoned his blood, despite almost suffering a fatal wound in the attempt, and falling to the ground near Lucy, who had joined Bella. While trying to attack the girls, Tam emerges from the ground and destroys it. Zane contacts Agatha Bacon but Gwilanna arrives at Wayward Crescent, and Zanna goes to Scuffenbury afterward. He arrived near Gawaine, who was badly injured, and started trying to heal him with the help of Teramelle. The Unicorn warned him to hurry, because Scuffenbury is the portal site to Fire Eternal, and the portal will soon open. While Gwilanna, who wants to bear Liz's child. She refuses to listen when Arthur explains that Gwillan now has a son. He uses a spell to trap Arthur in the armory and, using iscoscele Gawain, pulls the dark flames out of Liz. The dark fire changed Gawain's black color, then proceeded to kill Gwilanna before traveling to Scuffenbury. Alexa, who was locked outside by Gwilanna, grew a full wing and was later taken by G'Oreal from New Wearle to Scuffenbury.

At Scuffenbury, G'lant continues to fight the remaining two Darklings. Gwillan traps one, purifies auma and turns it into a dragon, which no longer threats. When he saw Gwillan, Ix lent all their power to the remaining Darkling, and it defeated G'lant, but Gawaine dragged him into the Immortal Fire, sacrificing himself to save G'lant and fulfilling Old Wearle's duties entrusting him with - eradicating Ix. Teramelle, who was attacked by a dark fire, followed her.

In the chaos caused by the dark fire, David, Zanna, Alexa and Gadzooks came together, and Gadzooks began to write a word. David convinces Zanna that everything will be all right, but everything will be different. Then David, Lucy, Tam, Zanna, Bella, and the dragons gathered disappeared. The book ends with the word Gadzooks is writing, "sometimes".
