Plot

Sir Lionel is one of the Knights of the Round Table, and his daughter Kayley wants to be a knight like her father. In Camelot, one of the knights, Ruber - who wanted to overthrow King Arthur - tried to kill him, but Lionel intervened and was killed. Ruber escaped from Camelot in exile after being driven back by Arthur's sword, Excalibur. During Lionel's funeral, Arthur told Kayley and his mother, Juliana, that they would be welcome if they came to Camelot.

A decade later, a griffin attacked Camelot, stealing Excalibur. The Merlin Eagle, Ayden, attacks the griffin and the sword falls into the Forbidden Forest. Meanwhile, Ruber invaded Kayley's house, taking everyone hostage and using the ingredients he got from magicians to create steel soldiers from the henchmen and roosters, later known as Bladebeak. He plans to use Juliana to get into Camelot.

After escaping and eavesdropping on Ruber and Griffin's conversation, Kayley enters the Forbidden Forest where she meets Garrett; a blind ascetic, and Ayden. Kayley convinces him to help him find Excalibur and learns that Garrett had been a stable boy in Camelot, and blinded by one of the horses he saved from a stable fire. Lionel still believed in Garrett, and taught him to adapt.

They entered the Land of the Dragon and met a cute two headed dragon named Devon and Cornwall who disliked each other, could not breathe fire or fly (the reason they were interrupted by other dragons), and wanted to be two individual dragons instead of one or two dragons headed. Devon and Cornwall decided to join the group; Garrett was reluctant to agree after Kayley convinced him.

Later, they found the Excalibur belt in a giant trail. Kayley's insistence to question Garrett caused him to lose Ayden's signal and be hurt by one of the Rubers. Kayley drags Garrett away when the thorns force Ruber and his men captive, and escort him to a small cave where the forest miracle heals Garrett's wound. When they are in the cave, Kayley and Garrett have connections. This group goes into the giant cave where a giant holds Excalibur; currently using it as a toothpick. Kayley manages to get Excalibur and they run away before Ruber can do it.

Out of the woods with Excalibur, Garrett stays behind, feeling undesirable in Camelot. After he leaves, Ruber catches Kayley and takes Excalibur. Devon and Cornwall, who witnessed this, rushed to Garrett assured him to go save Kayley. By working together for the first time, Devon and Cornwall can fly and breathe fire. Meanwhile, Kayley was held captive in one of the carriages; Bladebeak releases Kayley from the rope and Garrett comes to his aid and they enter the castle.

Inside, they find Ruber trying to kill Arthur with Excalibur; now tied to his arm. Kayley and Garrett intervene and trick Ruber into returning the Excalibur to his stone, causing his magic to destroy Ruber and return the mechanics, including Bladebeak, back to normal. Then, with Camelot restored to its former glory, Kayley and Garrett become knights at a round table.

Production

In May 1995, The Quest for the Grail was the first project announced by Warner Bros.. Feature Animation. Bill Kroyer and Frederik Du Chau were announced as directors, with Sue Kroyer serving as a co-producer. The early story centered around Susannah who started a dangerous quest for the Holy Grail to save his sister from a cruel and powerful knight. The film was put into production before the story was completed, but during the fall of 1995, the animator was reassigned to complete the Space Jam . Meanwhile, in April 1996, Christopher Reeve served as King Arthur. During the interim, several story changes were made that resulted in creative differences between Kroyers and studio management, which forced the team to leave the project in February 1997. Du Chau eventually replaced Kroyer as a temporary director Reeve was replaced by Pierce Brosnan when he became unavailable to record a new dialogue.

Chrystal Klabunde, Garrett's main animator, said in an article in Animation Magazine, "It's very hard, all executives gladly run around and play executives, get a corner office - but very few of them have the concept of animation altogether, about doing an animated movie It never occurred to anyone at the top that they had to start from the bottom and build it.The problem really comes in the experience of everyone involved from Disney who has the idea that you just said, "It never occurred to them that it was done because Disney has the infrastructure in place, working like clocks, we do not have it." The watchdog's effect, Michel Gagnà © © also says, "People give up. layout kicked out, background heads, executive producers, producers, directors, association producers - all heads rolled up. lit to work on. "

Reportedly, "cost swelling and production nightmare" made the studio to "reconsider their commitment to animated displays." Filmmaker Brad Bird (who leads The Iron Giant , Warner Bros.'s next animated film) thinks that micromanaging, which he says has worked well for Disney but not for Warner Bros., has become part of the problem.

Animation

The film is mostly animated at the Warner Bros. Features Animation facility. located in Glendale, California, United States and London, England, UK. In January 1996, the London animation studio opened in which over 50 animators are expected to animate 20 minutes of animation, which will be sent back to Glendale for a painted-and-painted. Additional studios working on movies include Yowza! Animation in Toronto, Ontario, Canada where they helped in cleaning animation, Heart of Texas Productions in Austin, and A. A/S Movies in Copenhagen where, along with London, about a quarter of animated films abroad. The animators who watched were Athanassios Vakalis for Kayley, Chrystal Klabunde for Garrett, Cynthia Overman for Juliana, Alexander Williams for Ruber, Dan Wagner for Devon and Cornwall, Stephen Franck for Griffin and Bladebeak, and Mike Nguyen for Ayden.

Computer animation is used for some scenes, like to make ogre rock. According to Katherine Percy, head of the CGI effect, the software they use is designed for use in live action.

Critical reaction

On Rotten Tomatoes review, the film has a 35% approval rating based on 23 reviews with a 5.2/10 approval rating.

David Kronke of Los Angeles Times describes the film as "formula", and writes that it is "an almost perfect reflection of the disturbing trend in animation features", called Kayley "spoony female heroine problem -standard ", and said that" Garrett's blindness is the only adventurous element for a movie, but it even seems to be counted: its lack of vision is hardly debilitating, yet it still gives children lessons in acceptance. "Critical of stories, animations, characters, and music, James Berardinelli of ReelViews claims the film is "boring, uninspired, and, worst of all, characterized by artwork that can generously be called 'unimpressive'." Stephen Holden of > New York Times write "Come on 20th Century Fox's fertile but ridiculous Anastasia (a much better film than this one), Quest for Camelot Disney mas ih has an artistic franchise on animation features. "Kevin J. Harty, editor of a collection of essays called Cinema Arthuriana, says the film is" a little indebted to, no, like Warner's publicity claims, actually based on Chapman's novel ".

Peter Stack of the San Francisco Chronicle argues that the film is "a vibrant adventure with many romantic and comic charms" that "aims to please a wide variety of ages, with silly jokes, cliché romance, oversize villains and catchy tones conducted by Celine Dion and LeAnn Rimes, among others. "
