Cheng returned to Shanghai and was reluctant to cooperate with the Japanese. He makes secret plans with Ye Zhiqiu to save their loved ones and allies, and kills Nishino. One night, when Nishino and Mao Zai were disturbed by opera performances in the theater, Cheng and his men broke into jail to save Hong Shouting, Ling Husheng and others. After returning to the theater, Cheng and his colleagues attack Japan and kill Nishino. Mao manages to escape backstage, where he holds Ye hostage at gunpoint and threatens to kill him if Cheng does not put down his gun. At that time, Bao appears and saves Ye from Mao, but dies in the process. Wrathful Cheng voiced his anger at Mao by shooting him repeatedly.
